Too little too late for young Brits

The Brits enjoyed their greatest success on the final day of the Maureen Connolly Challenge, bringing some respectability to the scoreline at Coral Beach.

Having already relinquished the trophy ? for the 20th time ? by the third game on Friday, the defending champions went into the final day of competition 7-1 down and hoping to salvage some pride in the best-of-11 series.

The day started badly with 6ft1ins Naomi Broady going down 6-2, 7-6 to American number two Joanna Mather but then the British number one started the mini-fightback.

Naomi Cavaday, disappointed to lose against Mather on Friday, beat Sarah Guzick 6-0, 6-3 with a commanding display of power tennis.

The final game of the 32-year-old tournament then saw the older players in the Under 14 and Under 16 transatlantic challenge go head-to head in the doubles.

And Broady and Cavaday prevailed 7-6, 6-3 over Guzick and Mather to give the Brits their third win but still suffer their heaviest defeat in the tournament since 1990, going down 8-3 to make the overall score 20-11 in favour of the Americans.

This was the first time all the matches had been completed in Bermuda, with the 2000 edition of the Challenge ending 4-4 with the final day's play washed out.
