?Too much time wasted?
Despite the inclement weather that has left his team?s Americas Championship hopes hanging in the balance for another 24 hours, Bermuda skipper Irving Romaine remained upbeat at King City yesterday evening.
Bermuda were set a winning target of 163 runs in 24 overs, however bad light halted their pursuit with eight wickets in hand.
?All we can do now I sit around and wait. I would have rather took the 163 off of 24 overs because their best bowler (Pitter) had already been warned (for excessive running on the crease) and couldn?t bowl no more.
?I would have really loved to have batted on but it definitely got too dark and very dangerous to bat on that pitch,? Romaine said.
He also agreed that the match officials were slow to respond whenever the covers had to be applied or removed, and even in their decision making which led one to believe, at times, they were unclear over rules governing the tournament.
There were also concerns the groundstaff were paying more attention to the other match nearby involving hosts Canada and Argentina.
?The umpires were scared to make a decision on their own. Until the pitch got extremely wet and stuff, they came off,? Romaine said.
?And this was sad because the tournament doesn?t have another rain date. So the umpires were forcing the game on and the conditions were not playable today, but we were forced to play on it.?
USA team manager Orville Hall, added: ?I understand the umpires have a job to do and follow the rules and regulations. But I think in spite of all that too much time was lost in the game.
?I think there were some situations whereas they (umpires) probably could have sped it up a little bit. And it was unfortunate because we thought we had a very good opportunity if we had the chance to bowl 20 overs to Bermuda.
?But that is why cricket is a game of uncertainties and one of the things you have to deal with. You are always going to be a little upset if you thought you had an opportunity to win the match.
?But our guys are professionals and they understand what is at stake here and still have another chance tomorrow and try and beat Canada.?
Romaine, meanwhile, gave his team full credit for the manner in which they responded throughout the tournament.
?We still came through and haven?t lost a game in the tournament although we didn?t finish this one,? he said.
?The guys are holding their heads high because they know they done extremely well. But it?s out of our hands now. We did well in the tournament but now we will have to sit and wait.
?This has been a total team effort and everybody from beginning to end played their part. This showed how vastly we have improved to become one of the strongest teams in the Americas Region.
?We?ve improved dramatically and it feels good to be feared as one of the teams to watch out for in the region.?
