Top two confident ahead of title showdown

Tabletoppers MR Onions and challengers Lobster Pot go in to Saturday's Commercial League showdown at White Hill Field in confident mood after both teams picked up maximum points at the weekend.

If Onions win they will take the title but if Pot triumph the league will be decided the following week as both sides play make-up fixtures.

Onions had to come from behind against PHC on Saturday when Kyle Lightbourne converted a penalty after Stephen Ludgate pushed Keith Bell just five minutes into the game.

MRs equalised midway through the first half when Colin Keane tapped in a rebound after Eoghan O'Dwyer had hit the bar.

Onions then dominated in the second half with the PHC goalkeeper keeping his team in the game with an excellent save from a Mike Neville free kick.

Onions were reduced to ten men following a bizarre incident midway through the half. O'Dwyer fouled Bell and both players were booked ? O'Dwyer for the foul and Bell for his exaggerated rolling.

The incident took place in front of the Onions bench and, following his booking, O'Dwyer stepped off the pitch to take a drink and immediately received a second yellow card for leaving the pitch without permission.

Keane won the game with an excellent lob over the 'keeper from a John Lally cross five minutes from time.

Tuff Dogs put up a brave fight against Lobster Pot but found themselves 1-0 down after 25 minutes when winger Jameel Effendy crossed for Mike Johnston to fire home. Ten minutes later Effendy repeated the service for Dave Allison who hammered the ball into the bottom right corner.

Just before the break Dogs' Jeff Franklin hit the bar and he had the best chance of the second period when he tore through the Pot defence only for 'keeper Brian Ward to force him to fire wide.

Pot took the win 2-0.

North Village remained third after a 1-1 draw with Key West. Village's Ricky Hill nodded in a second half corner but Key West's Paul Towlson flicked on a cross to even the score.

BAA's 7-1 win over Somerset Bridge Peskies put the West End club on the brink of relegation although they could still beat the drop as could Devonshire Rec. Lions who went down 3-1 to Robin Hood who scored through Alex McLouglin, Massimo Tarrotta and David Wolfe.

Dandy Town Roots brought promotion from the B Division closer with a 4-0 win over Boulevard at Shelly Bay.

Boulevard started off the better side and should have been in front in the opening minutes as a misskick by Lloyd Christopher allowed Cleveland Rogers a clear shot from 12 yards but he struck high and wide.

Roots survived another early scare but then settled into their normal flowing football and took the lead through Darron Simons as he cut inside from the left. Simons added another as central midfielder Don Lewis supplied a defence-splitting ball.

Roots should have gone into the break with more than a two-goal lead but Shennon Gilbert missed three clear chances.

Roots added another two goals after the break with substitute Troy Lewis playing a one-two with Simons and then expertly volleying the return past the Boulevard 'keeper.

Walter Musson added the fourth just before the whistle when he dribbled through the Boulevard defence and slid home.

St. George's are just a point behind Roots after walloping Wolves 18-1. It was 10-0 at half-time with Lionel Cann getting eight and Herbie Bascome and Freddie Hall getting one each. Cann got another four in the second half while Hall added another and Shea Pitcher, Cal Rayner and Eugene Crockwell all piled in. Bobby Smith scored the lone strike for Wolves.

Vasco Mariners put nine past Prospect/Fire without reply. Paul Frias weighed in with four, Micheal Bean notched two while Joe Cunha, Bo Sagger and John Frias netted one each.

Devonshire Colts and Prison Officers drew 1-1 with Colts netting in the first half as Stefan Dupres, on his season debut, lobbed the 'keeper.

It stayed that way until late in the game when Colts' Jay Bean hit an attempted back pass to his goalkeeper from his opponents' half and gifted Dwight Richards the equaliser.

Dockyard Falcons beat Pest Control 5-2 with two goals each from Dwayne DeRosa and Gary Trott and another from Brian Bradshaw.

Extros' mini-revival came unstuck at Shelly Bay as a rampaging Hamilton Parish put eight past them.

Pick of the goals was a belter from Irving Burgess which was too powerful for the 'keeper to stop. Also on the scoresheet were Sean Dill and Leroy Richardson with two each while Jude Burgess and Alton Caisey also tallied. Josef Gooden and Kent Bascome netted for Extros.
