Town look to crop of teens to help harvest trophies
Dandy Town coach Devarr Boyles has what other coaches long for - a good crop of youngsters to work with.
"This year we have a very young team. I think the average age of the team is 24. And I am very encouraged heading into a new season because most of them have been recruited from our junior programme," he explained.
During Town's heyday in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the club became known as the "youth explosion". Now with so much young blood at his disposal, Boyles is bracing himself for what he describes as the Youth explosion - Part Two.
"Before our team was ageing but now we've managed to bring the age down to exactly where we want it," he said. "We have a few young players who played in our youth programme before. Lashun Dill, Tyron Douglas, Sri Wilson and Kelvon Butterfield - just to mention a few. And I am very happy. So it is a bit familiar and a bit unfamiliar."
Boyles, a former Bermuda international midfielder, didn't rule out the possibility of lacing up his boots.
"The club and I are still negotiating who will assist me in coaching and once that's sorted out, then I think I can begin getting myself up to scratch," he said.
During Sunday's 2-1 Martonmere Cup win over Devonshire Cougars, Boyles had a quiet day sitting on the bench.
"I do all of my shouting on Tuesdays and Thursdays," he quipped. "But I have faith in my players and at the end of the day it is all up to them to execute on the pitch."
Boyles, who savoured Friendship Trophy success last season, expects veteran Carlos Smith to make his presence felt at the club soon. Reggie Tucker Jr and last year's skipper Lionel Furbert have also been out of action thus far.
The coach is also pleased to see Khano Smith firing on all cylinders while the fleet-footed Seyoum Tuzo again proved that he can be counted on to produce the goods.
"Our youngsters are going to make a few mistakes here and there, but we also have a few experienced players around," he added. "We just need to stay focussed and whenever we have our moments in attack we must execute."
