Tri champ Flora makes history

Flora Duffy: Victory in the 11-14 year-old division maintained her perfect Iron Kids record.

Teenager Flora Duffy etched her name into Iron Kids history over the weekend when she lifted yet another title in the annual junior triathlon sponsored by Capital G.

Competing in the racing bike division, Duffy became the first girl ever to win her age division in each of her eight years of eligibility.

That she also won her age group overall championship for the fifth time further underlined her dominance of the local junior girls' triathlon scene over the past few years.

Another of Bermuda's most promising juniors, 14-year-old Geoffrey Smith, bowed out of Iron Kids competition with a decisive victory in the senior boys' age group.

Geoffrey's brother, Mark, completed a family double, taking the 7-10 year-old boys' age group championship while record-breaking swimmer Kaitlyn Miller repeated as champion in the younger age group.

Other girls' age division winners among the racing bikers were Sophie Adams (19.19), Claire Hawley (18.07), Alex Easton (31.04), and Ally Bolton (33.30) who all won decisively.

The irrepressible Caitlyn Conyers was also a winner (in 28.50) but was pushed all the way by Amy Fox who eventually finished only 17 seconds back. On the boys' side, Nathan Amaral and Kenny Thompson won their age divisions comfortably while Justin Collis used his blazing foot speed to edge out Tim Fox.

Alex, Thomas and Mathew Godfrey (on racing bikes) achieved what was believed to be the first ever Iron Kids family "triple double." Each repeated as champion in his respective age division and this year marked nine-year-old Alex's third victory out of three - a perfect Iron Kids record.

"Most Improved" trophies in each age group were awarded to participants who beat their preceding year's time by the greatest margin.

Three of this year's winners with their time improvements were Jamila Eve (5.13), Amy Fox (2.34) and Khamari Greaves (1.50). Eric Levigne was the other "Most Improved" winner.

Last year, displaying true Iron Kids spirit, Levigne had battled through major mechanical bike problems, finally finishing a long way behind his rivals. This year all went well and he shaved an amazing 17.12 off his 2001 time.

Over 120 juniors took part in the 14th annual event at Southside. The entry represented a 20 percent increase over last year as BMX-mountain bikers competed among themselves for the first time rather than against the much faster racing bikes.

Among the female BMX/mountain bikers, ten-year-old Madeleine Collins was fastest over the junior distance (100 metre swim, 2.5 mile bike and 0.5 mile run) with a time of 20.34.

Twelve year old Libby Brewin led the 11-14 year olds (200m swim, 5-mile bike and one-mile run) in 33.26. And newcomer David Lunn's 19.52 was the fastest junior boys' time while 11-year-old Julian Fletcher turned in the fastest "non-racer" time in the older boys' age group with 36.14.

Other BMX-mountain bike age division winners were Alexandra O'Hearne (23.03), Jessica Parish (21.44), Sophie Faulkenberry (21.20) and Taylor Eve (56.22)
