Tucker cousins combine to sink Eagles

Two first-half strikes from cousins Kwame and Janeiro Tucker grounded Somerset Eagles at Southampton Oval yesterday.

Making it truly a family affair, the Tucker duo capitalised on their chances in clinical fashion to help their team to a second win of the season and first since October 19.

Kwame struck first to put the home team out in front in the 19th minute before Janeiro notched what ultimately proved to be the winner 14 minutes before the half.

Eagles, unfortunate not to have capitalised on several creative chances, replied through a 31st minute Darren Dowling strike which temporarily saw the two west end clubs level.

"We've been working hard and haven't really been out of any match this year," said Rangers' and Bermuda international 'keeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams afterwards.

Rangers' win yesterday could also be attributed to Adams who was called upon to execute several timely saves to keep his team afloat, especially a spectacular 89th minute acrobatic effort which denied Eagles a share of the spoils.

"We have a young team and it's just a matter of us learning how to play with each other and we just have to stay together and keep fighting," he added.

Play got off to a mostly uneventful start as both clubs struggled to find their rhythm in the early going.

But as the opening half progressed, Rangers gradually began to gain a marginal edge in the middle of the park with skipper Omari Hart and Ottis Steede dictating most of the play.

Eagles, on the other hand, seemed content to rely on the fast-break with pacy forwards Lamaul Crofton, Rodre (Piper) Wilson and Dowling becoming a threat whenever let loose down either flank.

However, Rangers would draw first blood when Kwame Tucker smartly chipped the ball into an empty net after Eagles' 'keeper Ian Raynor collided with Keion Simmons attempting to collect a high ball.

Tucker, with all the time in the world, showed presence of mind as he calmly picked his spot.

Eagles defender Shuaib Worrell, who handled the ball on its way into the back of the net, was carded for unsportsmanlike play.

Inspired, Rangers nearly doubled their lead when player/coach Meshach Wade had a point-blank volley blocked in front of goal followed by Kemon Simmons who headed Janeiro Tucker's cross from the left over the bar.

But Eagles made their hosts pay dearly for those misses. During a quick raid down the middle, Crofton cleverly slipped the ball through a porous Rangers defence allowing Dowling to slot the ball home from close range between the legs of an onrushing Adams.

Before the dust had settled, however, Janeiro Tucker rose in the middle unchecked and powerfully headed home Hart's in-swinging corner kick five minutes later to restore his team's lead ? for good.

If the first half belonged to Rangers, then the second must be credited to Eagles who were able to step it up a notch, only to be denied either by some poor finishing or the heroics of Adams.

In the 60th minute, Adams raced off his line to bravely collect the ball at Wilson's feet and then the agile 'keeper just got enough glove on the ball to again deny the striker a deserved goal.

Rangers also created a few late chances to increase their lead with Janeiro Tucker getting two quick bites at the cherry, only to see his efforts go wide.

Both teams had calls for a penalty fall on deaf ears as referee Stuart Crockwell would have none of it.

Wary of the expiring clock, Eagles continued to carry the match to their opponents in a desperate bid for the all-important equaliser.

And Keion Simmons looked to have given his team a share of the spoils when his shot from outside of the 18-yard box ? destined for goal ? was brilliantly tipped over the bar by an airborne Adams.
