Two-goal Shaun fires up five-star City

A late double by Shaun Goater helped Manchester City see off gallant Crewe in the First Division on Saturday.

Goater bagged goals in the 80th and 89th minutes as City ran out 5-2 winners - a victory that sees them sixth in the table after three games. They play second-placed Burnley today in the traditional August Bank Holiday programme.

The Blues stormed to a 2-0 lead when first Paulo Wanchope and then Stuart Pearce netted at Maine Road.

However, two goals on the stroke of half-time saw second-bottom Crewe draw level.

Thankfully Goater was on hand late on to prevent a total collapse - his first goal came from a header, the second a cool finish after being put through one on one with the 'keeper - and Wanchope's second in the last minute meant boss Kevin Keegan could breathe a sigh of relief.

"It was a game that had everything and nothing as far as I was concerned. It was just unbelievable," said Keegan. "I think what the City fans can take some comfort from is that we have scored eight goals in two home games, it could have been a lot more. They have seen a lot of entertainment and a willingness to go and try and win football matches.

"We can do it better and I am sure we will get better."

Keegan said he wanted to see Goater and his teammates in the swim - literally.

"We have a new fitness coach and he believes it is important for the team to go swimming. He has my full backing, you don't buy a dog and then do the barking yourself," he said.

"I am not a great swimmer and some of the lads aren't either, but we will do it as we believe it is a vital time to recover."

Meanwhile, Kyle Lightbourne's luck in front of goal shows no sign of changing.

The striker has yet to find the back of the net for his new side Macclesfield Town, who are without a win since the beginning of the new season.

The Silkmen drew 0-0 with Football League new boys Rushden and Diamonds on Saturday.

Lightbourne caused the visitors problems all afternoon and must have thought he had opened his account after 30 minutes.

Powering his way into a shooting position, he let fly but saw Rushden 'keeper Billy Turley stick out a desperate boot which deflected the ball to safety. Minutes later Lightbourne saw another effort flash over the crossbar.

"I was very pleased with our effort ration on what was a very hot day," said manager Gil Prescott. "We're going to try and win every game but once again we're just not quite getting the breaks."
