Yet another young and talented Bermudian athlete is making his mark overseas.

Twenty year-old Tyrone Smith, who attends the University of Missouri-Rolla, leapt to fourth place in the long jump at the NCAA Division Two Indoor Track and Field Championships earlier this month.

The former North Chicago High School student, who is the son of Wendy Parker and is majoring in history, concluded an outstanding indoor season for his college with an effort of 24 feet and six and a quarter inches at the championships ? a quarter of an inch short of claiming third.

Immediately preceding the meet, Smith had been named the Great Lakes region?s Athlete of the Year by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
