Unbeaten Social Club looking for respect

Defending Premier Division champions Southampton Rangers and fellow title contenders Social Club will both rest their unbeaten records on the line at Southampton Oval tomorrow.

Rangers remain firmly on course to defend their title, perched on top of the pile with 11 points from six matches, while second-placed Social Club have seven points from four matches ? but have a game in hand over the leaders.

Rangers will be seeking to stretch their lead at the summit and bring Social Club?s impressive unbeaten win streak to an end. But anything less would throw the league title race wide open and enable Social Club to make up considerable ground on the leaders.

Over the past two seasons Social Club have proved they belong in the top tier. But according to team member, Kenneth Darrell jr, the Angle Street club have yet to receive the recognition they deserve.

?We really want to win this match in order to send a message out to everyone else,? Darrell told . ?I think we have a point to prove because everybody still thinks we are pushovers and it is about time people began recognising us as a team to be reckoned with.?

And a win in Rangers? own backyard, Darrell added, would be the ideal place to make a bold statement and make other teams sit and up and take notice that Social Club are for real.

?We?re going there to win and I think it?s time people recognise that we mean business. We never get the recognition we deserve unless Charlie (Marshall) scores a century. But if he doesn?t make a hundred then you don?t hear anything else about us,? Darrell argued.

Darrell is confident his team can obtain a favourable result tomorrow, but admitted the task ahead was a daunting one.

?I think it will be somewhat of a struggle, but all we need to do is stick to what we know and execute on the day. Our batsmen and bowlers will all have to apply themselves. We have the batsmen capable of making the runs and bowlers who can get us wickets, and we have already proven this season what we can do.?

Social Club will again rely upon the likes of player/coach Marshall, Jahmiko Marshall, Nakia Smith and Dano Outerbridge to come good with the bat, while former Ranger Kenny Phillip, Darrell, Jaymo Durham and Dean Bean are expected to shoulder the bowling duties.

Rangers are gunning for a second straight limited overs title to add to their Two-Day championship they won last month in the absence of several leading cast members.

?This is a very important game for us and an opportunity to increase our lead at the top of the table,? stated Rangers coach Clevie Wade. ?But we cannot underestimate Social Club and I give them their due respect to be in the position they are in.?

Wade added: ?They are not what you might call a glamorous club . . . but they must be doing something right because they have been managing to get the job done.

?And so I give all credit and respect to Charlie (Marshall) and his boys. But we are also coming to play cricket and get a job done and hopefully things will go our way.?

St.David?s, meanwhile, remain within striking distance of Social Club in third place with five points from six matches, while Western Stars lie fourth with four points from five matches.
