US boxing official?s below the belt tactics

Victory in the ring in a title match is normally enough to secure a belt, but Teresa Perozzi still had plenty of work to do to get her hands firmly on the ultimate prize even after her sixth round defeat of Scroller Carrington.

A dispute had been brewing in the days leading up to her WIBC Middleweight contest between promoter Buxo Potts and boxing official Don (Moose) Lewis ? a dispute which boiled over on fight night in Trinidad.

The first two boxers to claim victories on Friday?s card were handed their belts in the ring but Lewis took them back immediately, promising to ?mail them on? at a later date.

Perozzi was told the same thing after her victory, but she refused to give up her new prized possession.

She claimed she was threatened with having a result unsanctioned if she refused to hand over the belt and after the intervention of her manager and corner, they managed to stash the belt away in a bag.

They then hid it in their van until Perozzi was paid for her fight ? they then left the stadium.

It later emerged Lewis was arrested at the airport on his way out of the country the following day, with local promoter Potts claiming he hadn?t handed over the belts and Lewis claiming they hadn?t been paid for.

?As soon as I arrived in Trindad, I sensed something was up,? said Perozzi, keeping the sparkling belt within touching distance at all times during her interview with

?There seemed to be some form of dispute between the promoters and an official but I tried not to think about any of that. I had a job to do and I stayed focused on that.

?Once I had finished the fight, they gave me the belt for the pictures and for the crowd and then he asked for it back. He said he would mail it to me in a few weeks which all sounded a bit strange.

?I had worked hard for that and there was no way I was going to give it up. I wasn?t leaving the country without it.

?It then got a little bit nasty and started threatening me, saying he would not put the results in and that he was going to sanction the event.

?I was pretty sure he couldn?t do that so again I refused. My management backed me up and we ended up stashing it in a bag and then in the van.

?It was all pretty weird but these are the sort of things that go in boxing.

?But the important thing is that I?ve got the belt, it?s mine, it?s here and I got it through Customs.

?This is mine, this is what I?ve worked for and I was never going to give it up.

?If they?ve got a dispute, that?s their problem, nothing to do with me.

?Ifought the fight and I won the fight.?
