Veteran Hill takes step back
Bailey's Bay all-rounder Corey Hill (above) insists his playing days at the highest level are over.
The 37-year-old, who accompanied Bermuda's 1997 ICC squad to Malaysia, was overlooked for national team selection and controversially dropped from Somerset's Cup Match team last year.
"You've seen the last of me perform at a high level," Hill told The Royal Gazette. "However, I have planted three seeds (two daughters and a son) that I am confident will flourish into something really special."
Since slipping in to relative obscurity, Hill, once regarded as one of the Island's top all-rounders, has grappled with a troublesome leg injury.
"I have an injury (right leg) that will not allow me to give one hundred percent, and being the competitor that I am it wouldn't make sense playing," he explained.
"I intend to help out with the coaching at Bay when feasible. I have dedicated a lot of time to cricket, and so it's only natural that I miss playing.
"But I don't mind watching Bay's youngsters develop because I've had my share of success and I just hope that whoever the youngster is that fills the void, he has more success than me."
In budding all-rounders Tre Govia and Rodney Trott, Bay's future appears to be bright.
Never one to shy away from controversy, Hill rocked the local cricket fraternity when he publicly lashed out over being snubbed for national team duty and then being axed from Somerset's Cup Match team last summer.
A year later, however, Hill insists he has no axe to grind.
"I hold absolutely no grudges towards Bermuda or Somerset for dropping me from their squads," he said. "l'm still Corey and I know where I stand in life and nobody can take that from me.
"And I wish all the cricketers good luck and I hope they reach their dreams because we probably have more talent per square mile than in any other country."
