Village go for threepeat

North Village Rams will begin a quest to become the first ever Premier Division club to win three Martonmere Cup titles on the trot when they take on PHC Zebras at BAA Field tomorrow night.

Rams already hold records for overall wins (eight), appearing in the most finals (12) and in becoming the first club to win successive titles on three separate occasions in the competition?s 33-year history.

Somerset Trojans, Boulevard, Dandy Town and Vasco da Gama are the remaining clubs to win back-to-back Martonmere Cup titles.

Village won the cup for the first time in 1973-74 and successfully defended it in 1974-75, before repeating the feat in 1978-79 and 1979-80 and more recently 2003-04 and 2004-05.

Fresh off a Charity Cup win over Devonshire Cougars earlier this month, Rams? coach Dwayne (Streaker) Adams reckons his team can only go from strength to strength on the eve of tomorrow night?s clash.

?We are still trying to perfect some of the things which we have been working on in training over the pre-season. And I think we are on schedule in terms of what we are trying to achieve overall over the course of the season,? Adams told

Village?s Charity Cup win saw them equal Zebras? record for most consecutive wins (four) on coach Adams? debut at the helm.

?To be honest I actually felt like coming on the field when we were up 4-2 but still not doing some of the things we should have been doing,? he added.

?But at the end of the day a squad of sixteen had been picked and those selected had a job to do and overall I thought it was a great experience for me.?

Adams? Rams edged Cougars 4-3, playing without the Jennings trio of Daniel, Tariq and Jemieko ? all players who will undoubtedly boost the urban club when they return along with forceful striker Mackie Crane and super sub Quincy Paynter.

In pint-sized Reggie Lowe, Rams might have picked up a rare gem.

?I?m certainly encouraged overall because we have quite a bit of talent to draw from as we go forward,? Adams continued. ?A few of our guys are currently out injured and we also have some youth.?

One such player who raised eyebrows in the Charity Cup was diminutive forward Shane Hollis weighing, perhaps, no more than 110lbs.

As for tomorrow night?s commitment, Adams said: ?You may see one or two changes in the team but at this point we prefer to hold our cards close to our chest. But we have a game plan set and at the end of the day it is the players who will have to go out there and win the battle.?

Rams lost 2-0 and 3-0 to Zebras in league play last season before edging their rivals 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final en route to winning an eighth title overall.
