Village gunning for more cup glory

Two of the most successful clubs in Martonmere Cup history will lock horns tonight at BAA Field for the right to advance to next month?s final at the National Sports Centre.

Eight-time winners and two-time defending champions North Village take on seven-time champs Somerset Trojans ? making a first appearance in the semis since 1992 ? in tonight?s second-match of a semi-final double-header.

Last year?s beaten finalists Dandy Town Hornets clash with Devonshire Cougars in tonight?s opening match.

Village currently hold records for the most overall wins, most final appearances (12) and only last season became the first club in the competition?s 33-year history to win successive titles on three separate occasions.

Now they could be on the verge of achieving even further Martonmere glory ? winning the competition an unprecedented three times on the trot.

But first they will have to see off a rejuvenated Trojans outfit yet to be defeated in four outings so far.

?Football is a funny sport because you never know what is going to happen. And I expect it to be a very interesting game and one a lot of people have been waiting to see,? said Village stalwart Kentoine Jennings.

?Somerset have depth but we also have a lot of depth at Village and it would be nice to see some of spark that used to be back in the day when both clubs had strong teams.

?But at the end of the day I think any of the teams (semi- finalists) could win and we just have to be at our best and come prepared to play.?

Village are still without the services of injured stars Ralph Bean jr and last year?s cup final hero Jemeiko Jennings through injury while big striker Mackie Crane has yet to break into the team.

Another power forward, Keishen Bean, is presently involved in studies abroad.

But on a more promising note, Tarik and Daniel Jennings have returned from exile while Quincy Paynter could be included on coach Dwayne Adams? team roster for tonight?s meeting with Trojans.

Trojans edged Village 1-0 last February at Somerset Cricket Club, the last time the two clubs met.

The West Enders welcomed former captain Richard Scott back against Boulevard over the weekend. Scott had contemplated bowing out of top flight football but has seemingly had a change of heart.

Current captain Jelani Scott is expected to return along with the valued services of Lamaul Crofton and Sean Simmons in the heart of Trojans? defence.

Simmons sat out the last match through suspension while Crofton was out through injury along with midfielders Terry Sousa and Joel Duffy.
