Walkover wins for Cook and Keyes in final

Bermuda?s Catherine Cook and Jack Keyes were gifted the Under-14 girls? and boys? singles titles as their overseas opponents were forced to fly home early from yesterday?s ITF Junior World Ranking Tournament at the WER Joell Stadium.

Recently crowned Island Construction B Division champ Cook kept unseeded Bahamian Gabrielle Moxey on the defensive for the most part with a devastating first serve, awesome return and clinical shot placement to take the opening set 6-4 of their final.

But then she wasn?t required to come out for the second set as Moxey bolted to the airport in order to catch a flight.

?Catherine was very consistent with her first serve and the length of her groundstrokes, which were bouncing within two or three feet of the baseline, allowed her to dominant the rallies,? commented David Lambert, the tournament?s assistant director.

?She was always in a position to dictate the flow of the game, while her returns also put her in a position to attack.?

Keyes, meanwhile, was declared winner of the boys Under-14 final by way of a walkover over unseeded American Cooper Maxwell who also left the Island yesterday afternoon.

In the boys? Under-18 semi-finals, Juan Martin Paredes upset top seed Corey Huggins in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 to set up an all-Ecuador final today against compatriot Patricio Alvarado who toppled American Bryan Swartz 6-1, 6-3 during yesterday?s other semi final.

Guatemala?s Analy Guzman defeated sixth seed Andrea Yacaman 6-2, 6-3 and will now meet American Lindsay Clarke, who breezed past Puerto Rico?s Manijee Ashrafi 6-3, 6-2, in today?s girls? Under-18 final.

?Overall we are very proud of the way our junior players have played this week,? Lambert added. ?I thought they all represented themselves well and now they are beginning to realise they can be just as good as their overseas rivals.?
