Warwick and Willow Cuts set for battle
Will Warwick walk tall yet again, or can Willow Cuts cut down the reigning giants of the Western Counties?
Today will tell the tale as the pair battle for supremacy and end of season bragging rights during the final of the Western Counties Cup at White Hill Field (11 a.m. start).
Warwick, who had help from Mother Nature in retaining the trophy two weeks ago when rain prevented play in their scheduled contest with PHC, will be anxious to prove themselves worthy of the title champions, while Cuts seek to take something from what has been a disappointing 2001 campaign.
Daniel Caines will once again lead Warwick into battle, matching a mixture of youth and experience against a Willow Cuts side that has recently been vetting its own share of youngsters.
The champs will be counting on the likes of guest players Sammy Robinson and Mark Ray for solid all around performances, with Ray probably the key.
The duo along with Kion Butterfield, Kion Smith, Douglas and skipper Daniel Caines will carry the batting load, while medium pacer Jason Williams has been brought back from studies abroad to spearhead the bowling attack, along with the likes of Dion Stovell and Robbie Richardson.
Richard Basden bears the burden of responsibility for Willow Cuts, the first year skipper will be looked to for his all-round ability, while added support in the batting department should come from the likes of brother Dexter Basden, Gladwin Edness and Dwight Basden. In the bowling arena Ozzie Hinds and Charles Swan may hold keys to exploiting Warwick's batsmen, who have proven far from consistent throughout the season.
Sunday witnesses a clash of titans at St. John's Field, as Western Stars play host to St. George's in an affair that should go a way towards determining the make-up of next year's Camel Cup, which features the top four finishers in the premier Division.
St. David's have already qualified as champions, leaving St. George's Stars, Bailey's Bay and Southampton to battle for the remaining slots.
Tomorrow's losers will likely find themselves on the outside looking in when the roll is called.
Bay have a dicey fixture as well, as they entertain Willow Cuts at Sea Breeze Oval, while Southampton travel to face Cleveland at Wellington Oval.
Other affairs have Devonshire hosting Somerset Bridge, Flatts travelling to face St. David's, Somerset welcoming PHC, and Police taking on Social Club.
