Warwick tops in cross-country

Hosts Warwick Academy emerged as the most successful team at this week's high school cross-country championships held over a two and a half mile course.

Warwick, Saltus and Bermuda High School were the only schools to be fully represented in the under-15 and over-15 divisions.

Warwick came out tops in both the boys and girls' under-15 races while Saltus (girls) and Berkeley (boys) won one apiece in the older division.

Among the under-15 boys, confusion at the finish and injury combined to produce a surprise result.

CedarBridge Academy's Taijuan Talbot, winner of the recent Front Street Mile, stormed into an early lead but was eventually overtaken by Geoffrey Smith of Warwick as Talbot suffered a strained hamstring.

However, as Smith headed towards the finish with an insurmountable lead, he took a wrong turn and by the time he got back on track had dropped to a disappointing fifth.

Smith's school-mate Sean Harvey came through to take the victory in 16 minutes 32 seconds. Matthew Godfrey of Saltus placed second and Rajiv Mallory of Warwick finished third.

In the girls' race, to no-one's surprise Flora Duffy of Warwick won in a time of 19.42 ahead of Kalita Furbert of CedarBridge and Emma Pearson of BHS.

In the over-15 race, a pack was formed immediately with the lead switching repeatedly before Husayn Brown of Saltus surged on the last lap to win in a time of 15.58. Dominique Nanette of Warwick finished second and Coyatito Smith of CedarBridge finished third.

Among the girls, Shardae Whitter of CedarBridge blew away the field to win easily in a time of 18.55. Jenny Palmer of MSA placed second and Chelsea Burns of Saltus third.
