Wash-out dampens WIA title chase

Heavy rain ruined the Father's Day clash between Commercial League frontrunners Leg Trappers and West Indian Association - the only scheduled fixture - and forced both teams to settle for five points each for a draw.

Fast bowler Stan Francis rocked leaders Leg Trappers after they were sent in by bowling openers David Hosier for two and Chris Fleming for six with only 18 runs on the board.

But Damion Henderson (17 not out) and Graham Strange (18 not out) repaired the early damage and had cautiously lifted Leg Trappers to 55 for two when rain forced the game to be abandoned in the 24th over.

The draw was a bitter disappointment for WIA skipper Barry Richards whose team trail Leg Trappers by 12 points but with a game in hand.

"We would have beaten them this time," Richards insisted. "They were facing defeat and I doubt they would have got more than 120 runs. They were thankful when the rain came.

"We were determined to beat them - and beat them bad. They will show us a little more respect next time."

Richards said his players had been training hard since Leg Trappers' spokesman James Broadbent predicted recently that nobody would beat Trappers this season, dubbing them the league's "dream team".

Francis finished Sunday's fiery 10-over spell with two for 17 while Junior Watts went for seven runs in six overs and Richard Austin's five overs cost nine runs. Randy Liverpool, who was in the middle of his second over when the game was halted, took nought for nine.

Broadbent was confident his side would have prevailed but for the rain.

"Stan Francis was very good, very hostile but he'd finished his spell and we were just settling in. We were looking at reaching the 150 mark and that would have been enough. Last year we made 144 against WIA at Police Field and then bowled them out for 103."

WIA (40 points) meanwhile get the chance to close the gap on Leg Trappers (52 points), who have a bye, when they take on bottom club Devonshire Stars at Garrison Field this weekend.

Third-placed North Village (35 points) meet fourth-placed Forties (33 points) - both clubs have lost one match each - at Shelly Bay while Sunday's other match pits Police Recreation Club against Jamaican Association at Police Field.

Village have lost the services of free-scoring opening batsman Robin Swan who has been sidelined by a serious knee injury but hope to have David Scraders back in their team.

Police and Jamaican Association have managed only one victory apiece so far this term and there should be little between the sides. The Jamaicans will be fresh after being out of action for two successive Sundays.

Newcomers Police, back in the league after two earlier stints, have been let down by their batting although they sprang a major surprise by defeating defending champions St. David's by two wickets at Lord's last month.
