Way opens up for Crockwell
Bermuda?s anticipated hosting of the Digicel Caribbean Cup third placed play offs next month could pave the way for in-form Boulevard striker and captain Shaki Crockwell to make his long-awaited debut for the national football team.
Crockwell was denied entry to the US on the team?s departure for Barbados via New York nearly two weeks ago for a previous run in with the law on local shores.
But news earlier week revealing that the Island has been invited to host the triangular play off involving Haiti, Dominican Republic and Bermuda has given the Blazers? frontman a new lease on life.
?Shaki (Crockwell) is back out training with us and he will be available for team selection,? commented national coach Kyle Lightbourne yesterday.
The eventual winner of the triangular play off will claim the eighth and final spot in the final round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifier alongside the six group qualifiers and hosts Trinidad and Tobago next January.
Caribbean Football Union (CFU) officials are expected to confirm Bermuda as hosts for next month?s play off by the end of the week, sources have told
Bermuda, Haiti and Dominican Republic all finished third among their respective Digicel Caribbean Cup second round qualifying groups.
Assistant national coach Paul Scope, meanwhile, confirmed that professional players John Barry Nusum ? who captained the national team in Barbados in the absence of the injured Kentoine Jennings ? and Khano Smith have received clearance from their clubs to bolster the national team next month. US-based goalkeeper Nigel Burgess has also been excused to play in the crucial series against Haiti and Dominican Republic, along with UK based Kevin Richards who was initially doubtful to make the trip for the play offs.
?As well as the current squad that went to Barbados, we are hoping to have Kentoine (Jennings) and Damon (Ming) back from injury. We have also called up Jason Williams as an extra goalkeeper due to Timmy?s (Figureido) circumstances,? Scope said.
Somerset Trojans? Figureido was sent off during last week?s final Group G match with hosts Barbados for handling the ball outside of the box, while UK based Ming has yet to take part in this year?s Digicel Cup tournament.
As for all national team members currently enrolled in studies in the US, Scope said: ?We will take a view on each college player after speaking to their coaches. Their soccer season is over, but we won?t interfere with their education priorities such as exams etc.?
In addition to Williams, Dandy Town?s Michael Parsons has been recalled to the national team.
Parsons was a member of the national squad that participated in the Digicel Caribbean Cup first round in US Virgin Island earlier this fall.
The health status of the former Blazer, however, now remains questionable after the midfielder pulled a muscle during Hornets? drawn league match with Devonshire Cougars at the Den last Tuesday night.
National team and Cougars? centre back, Darius Cox, has missed the Big Cats? last two matches against PHC and Town through sore ribs, learned yesterday.
