Young cricketers shine in Barbados

Bermudians Joshua Gilbert and Sinclair Smith shared in an unbroken 32-run fifth wicket stand that carried the Americas Development Under-15s to a six -wicket victory over Kenya at the Clico International Under-15 Knockout Cup Competition in Barbados at the weekend.

Somerset all-rounder Gilbert hammered three fours in a knock of 43, recorded off 97 balls to anchor the Americas run chase while Smith chipped in with an unbeaten 12 to carry their team to victory with 12.3 overs to spare and set up a semi-final showdown with the West Indies today.

The pair also enjoyed a good day in the field as off-break spinner Gilbert took two for 11 from six overs and wicketkeeper Smith took two catches and a stumping off the bowling of Gilbert to help restrict Kenya, who won the toss and elected to bat, to 133 all out in 46 overs.

Surprisingly, Gilbert was overlooked for man-of-the-match honours, which went to Canadian Nitisj Kumar who took three for 14 and scored four runs.

"Joshua has a lot of potential and is technically sound while Sinclair can bat anywhere," said Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) development director Arnold Manders. "They both have a lot of ability, the right attitude and a bright future ahead of them and hopefully they can remain consistent."
