Young star Augustus heading to home of golf
Young Bermudian golfer Daniel Augustus is on the verge of realising every player?s dream ? teeing off at the birthplace of the sport at St.Andrew?s in Scotland.
The 17-year-old, pictured, currently enrolled at the International Junior Golf Academy in South Carolina, has received invitations to compete in three Nike Series Junior Championships in the US and represent Team USA at the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Euro Junior Cup at St. Andrew?s in July.
?It?s really a blessing,? said Augustus, speaking from South Carolina. ?The academy has really helped me with my golf and I really don?t know what else to say.?
The Bermudian has been rewarded for his stellar play throughout the college season.
?In order to play in these tournaments you have to play at a high level and my game this year has been pretty much on target,? added Augustus, who turns 18 in three weeks? time and graduates from the academy on May 24.
The former CedarBridge Academy student is due to compete in a 54-hole tournament this weekend in South Carolina at the Haig Point Golf Course before travelling to Orlando, Florida to compete at the season-ending Tour Championship at Grand Cypress Resort later this month.
Augustus will then play in Aloha, Oregon before jetting off to St.Andrew?s to rub shoulders with some of the world?s elite junior golfers at the IJGT Euro Cup where he will compete among the boys? 16 to 19 age bracket.
?I feel honoured to be chosen to play among the elite juniors for the US,? he continued. ?This is the best thing that has ever happened to me golf-wise. Everything has just come together and my game has improved. I?m hitting the ball beautifully right now and I have also ironed out a few kinks in my swing.?
Augustus received written correspondence from Nike officials inviting him to play alongside some of the top juniors in the US.
The official IJGT invitation read: ?Dear IJGT Member, congratulations on your performances so far this season on the IJGT. Because of your performance, we would like to extend to you an invitation to participate in the IJGT Nike Series Junior Championships.?
In March, Augustus performed admirably at the IJGT Daufuskie Island Resort Championship in South Carolina, finishing a respectable fourth among a field of 48 golfers at the Jack Nicklaus-designed 7,081 yard, par 72 Melrose Golf Course ? his best ever performance in the US.
The reigning Fecchio Cup champion and past Bank of Bermuda Foundation International Junior Championship winner is currently enrolled in golf studies in South Carolina on a Tucker?s Point Golf Club scholarship.
?Daniel has worked extremely hard on his game. His attitude has been great and he has been an absolute pleasure to work with,? Augustus? coach and former PGA Tour player Andy Hinson told earlier this year.
