Zebras coach Wade warns ?we can?t be complacent?

PHC Zebras coach Mark Wade has warned his troops not to get complacent ahead of tonight?s Friendship Trophy semi-final clash with current cup holders North Village at BAA Field.

Zebras are fresh off a 3-0 away win over the Reds and will certainly enter tonight?s clash overflowing with confidence.

But coach Wade, who guided Zebras to Friendship Trophy success in 2001-02, moved swiftly yesterday to put Sunday?s result behind him, insisting Village would come out tonight with something extra to prove.

?By no means is this going to be a walk in the park,? warned Wade. ?Village now have the motivation to get revenge and so we have to remain on top of our game.

?That game (Sunday) is now over. Yes, it was pleasing to see some of things we have worked on in training finally come out on the pitch. But that game is over and forever in the record books. Now we have to move on to the next game not thinking we have actually won the game before we even enter the pitch.

?This is the Friendship semi-final and it would be great to move onto the final and play again at the National Sports Centre.?

Recalling Sunday?s shutout win over Village, Wade said his team were able to walk away victorious by ?putting away their chances? while the Reds repeatedly fired blanks at the opposite end.

It was Zebras? second triumph over Village this season.

?I think if Village were able to capitalise on some of the chances they received then the match might have turned out differently,? he added.?But we were able to put our chances away, something which haunted us the week before against Devonshire Cougars.?

Wade also praised hat-trick hero Omar Shakir, who produced an awesome display of the potential the coach has seen in the player all along. Shakir returned to Zebras after a brief stint at Somerset Trojans.

?I think yesterday we saw what he (Shakir) is capable of,? said Wade. ?He was given some fantastic service up front and he was able to capitalise on it.

?And that?s what strikers are supposed to do. So basically he did his job on Sunday and hopefully he can continue tonight.?

Zebras returned to top flight football at the beginning of the 2004-05 season after clinching the First Division title undefeated the previous season.

PHC are also firmly on course to repeat as the only club to date to capture both First and Premier Division title in successive seasons.

After clinching the 1999-00 First Division title, Zebras seized the Premier Division crown the very next year.

Tonight?s Friendship clash will be preceded by the First Division Shield semi-final involving Devonshire Colts and St.David?s.

Both clubs, thick in the hunt for promotion, are coming off losses over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Dandy Town, ousted from the Friendship Trophy last week for failure to turn up for a penalty shoot-out with Village, yesterday remained tight-lipped over their next course of action.

Town officials have threatened to take their case to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) committee.

Town and Village played to a 2-2 draw in the first encounter. However, referee George O?Brien erred by calling for a replay when the match should have been decided on penalties.
