Aussie Menzies shows his hill climbing class in gruelling Lighthouse Challenge

Australian Karl Menzies once again showed his class by winning the Lighthouse Challenge, the second stage of the CD&P Bermuda Grand Prix.

Menzies, who was victorious in the Hamilton Criterium, stormed the one-kilometre hill climb at Lighthouse Hill last night with a time of one minute, 59.91 seconds, ahead of Russell Downing.

Bermuda's number one Tyler Butterfield came 14th with a time of 2:13.81, while compatriot Geri Mewett finished 23rd with 2:17.92.

In the women's elite race Felicia Gomez won with a time of 2:29.75, while was Laura Van Gilder second and Janel Holcomb third.

Nathan Amaral scooped the 11-13 race, Molly Pilgrim won the girl's version and Philip Woolridge triumphed in the boys' 14-16 event.

Sophie Adams was the sole competitor in the girls' 14-16, while Mark Hatherly won the men's open, David Osbourne took the masters and Cheryl Osbourne claimed the honours in the women's race.

On Thursday night, Geri Mewett had scooped one of the $1,000 primes, while Tyler Butterfield enjoyed a top ten finish out of 38 starters in the Hamilton Criterium.

The first leg of the CD&P Grand Prix proved to be an exciting curtain raiser with a bunch sprint finish in the men's elite race, with Karl Menzies winning, Russell Downing coming second and Malcolm Elliott third.

Mewett finished 19th, while Butterfield was never out the front pack and lead into the final lap before the sprinters came to the fore.

In the elite female race Kelly Benjamin came first, Laura Yoisten, second and Laura Van Gilder third. Philip Woolridge won the 14-16 race. In the men's masters Dave Osbourne took the honours.

The third stage of the Bermuda Grand Prix, the Cheerios Dockyard Criterium, starts today at 11a.m.
