BFA steps up the search for new technical director

BFA Technical Committee chairman Mark Trott

The Bermuda Football Association has this week stepped up its hunt for a new technical director by officially advertising the post.

It will enable the chosen candidate to "stamp their blueprint" on the future of Bermudian football.

An application deadline of October 12 has been set for the crucial appointment which could come with a salary of $150,000 plus, and would trigger the hiring of a youth director, a youth coordinator and fund development manager.

To meet the BFA's criteria, candidates must possess an England FA Full Coaching Licence, UEFA "A" or other recognised equivalent and a minimum of five years' post-qualification experience coaching at a national or professional level. The BFA has also stated it would prefer the applicant to have had "previous success" directing the technical development of a national programme.

It is understood overseas candidates will be considered although the BFA are currently advertising only locally in their quest to find the right man.

Committee chairman Mark Trott described the job as "immense and exciting" with particular emphasis focused on developing grassroots football.

"We have had technical directors in the past, such as Clyde Best, so the title is not a new one," he said. "But this role will be more grass-roots and club football orientated. It's our aim to develop Bermudian football from the bottom up.

"It's an immense task but an exciting one with the chosen candidate having an opportunity to stamp his blueprint on Bermudian football for many years to come.

"Prior to us advertising, candidates took it upon themselves to send us their applications. Those will be vetted and considered with all applications submitted before the deadline.

"We will appoint the best candidate whether overseas or based locally. It's the quality of the candidate we're interested in.

"Originally we hoped to have someone onboard before the start of our domestic season. But the appointment is a matter of priority and we hope to make an announcement as soon as possible."

Earlier this year The Royal Gazette reported former Liverpool legend John Barnes had expressed an interest in the post. And last month one of FIFA's top technical consultants, Alvin Corneal, arrived on the Island to make a thorough assessment of the current football infrastructure. The former Trinidadian international submitted his report to the BFA, which included recommendations regarding the appointment of the technical director.

At a press conference at the BFA offices in August, president Larry Mussenden said he hoped an appointment would be made by the end of the year.

The BFA is the richest national sports governing body after the Government anounced in February its intention to pump an unprecedented $15 million into football. Over the next six years the huge cash injection will be handed out, financing the BFA's plan to re-vamp the sport domestically.
