Butterfield joins field of top cyclists for CD&P Grand Prix

He's back: Tyler Butterfield in action in the Cycling Grand Prix in Dockyard in 2004.

Some of the finest cyclists from around the world will be testing their mettle in the annual CD&P Bermuda Grand Prix tomorrow with organisers promising another exhilarating event.

The four-stage event includes three criterium races and a hill climb and will feature Bermuda's number one Tyler Butterfield, who will be cycling with pro-outfit Slipstream, for the first time since 2004.

In the elite men's competition a host of other esteemed names including fellow Islander Geri Mewett and UK rider Chris Brent, for Pinarello, have also signed up for the only international race staged in Bermuda.

Former time trial world record holder Karen Brems, for Webcor builders, and Laura Van Guilder, are among those headlining the women's elite event.

As usual, the Grand Prix kicks off with the and fast furious CD&P Hamilton Criterium tomorrow night where riders go out to not only to capture the best finish but secure the many lucrative prizes on offer. On Friday there is the Lighthouse Challenge, a gruelling uphill time trial staged in Southampton from 5 p.m.

The third stage is the Cheerios Dockyard Criterium on Saturday, which starts at 11a.m., followed by the Catlin Hamilton Circuit Race on Sunday at 8 a.m.

Event director Dannielle Bezant said around 70 entrants would be taking part in the elite races.

"I predict some very dynamic racing and I think the competition will go right down to the wire on the final day," Bezant said. "Some top names of the world of cycling from the UK and Canada are competing. We also have the likes of Tyler Butterfield and Geri Mewett from Bermuda who will get a great reception."

Last year's event was cut short with two days remaining due to tropical storm Florence. The race was cancelled for the first time in its history in 2003 because of Hurricane Fabian.
