<Bz49>Coddington brace sinks Key West

A two-goal salvo by North Village’s Stephen Coddington sunk Commercial A champs Key West on Saturday and put the Red Devils on top of the pile.

Key West scored early through Zane Stowe but Village equalised before the half before Coddington grabbed the winner in the 90th minute.

Meanwhile former champs MR Onions remain second after picking up three points in a close game against bottom of the table Island XI at St. David’s. Onions dominated possession in the first half and should have scored early on when Darragh O’Donoghue shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Island XI lobbed Onions keeper Chris Hewson in the first 20 minutes but hit the post. Another breakaway enabled Island XI to take the lead after 30 minutes when a Onions defensive clearance rebounded off an attacker to Ben Pewter who had a clear run on goal. His cross was finished off from close range by Paul Mello.

Onions equalised with the last kick of the first half from an Eoghan O’Dwyer penalty that was awarded after Lee Dwyer’s cross was handled in the area by Phil Rego. Onions continued to dominate possession in the second half but were frustrated by a well organised defence.

With 15 minutes remaining Onions were fortunate to be awarded a free kick on the edge of the area. O’Dwyer’s cross picked out unmarked substitute Gordon Paterson to head the winning goal, minutes after coming on to the pitch.

BAA are fourth after sharing a point with PHC in a 1-1 draw. BAA manager Tommy Gribbon headed in from six yards after Adam Shaw flicked on a Paul Colvin cross. But PHC equalised in 25th minute after a defensive mix-up between Stevie Black and Chris Taylor allowed Sheridan (Baldy) Ming to finish after being supplied by Al Thomas. The second-half saw PHC pinned back in their own half but a much fitter BAA were still unable to capitalise on numerous chances.

A sorry Lobster Pot went down 3-1 on a muddy BAA pitch to a determined Tuff Dogs outfit despite a great goal just before half-time by Pot legend Colin James.

In the B division table-toppers St. George’s All-Stars preserved their unbeaten record in a hard fought match against perennial rivals Somerset Extros. In an evenly contested first half All Stars’ Stevie Dickson missed a penalty but gleefully made up for that soon after by scoring from a pass from fellow striker Sinclair Smith.

In the second half All-Stars weathered constant pressure from a rampant Somerset team. Extros had a glorious opportunity themselves in the form of a penalty but they also failed to convert their chance. Dogged performances from goalkeeper Ernest McCallan and defenders Franklyn Greaves and Andrew Richardson, allowed the All-Stars to hang on for the victory.

Devonshire Rec Lions are still second after beating Vasco 2-1, while Valley are still riding high in the B Division after beating Devonshire All-Stars 6-0. Boulevard beat Somerset Bridge Peskies 2-0 on the road with goals from Cleve Roger and Terrance Stovell but the table is made more complicated by the decision of Hamilton Parish Workmen’s Club to drop out of the league.

In the only action in the C Division MR Onions Real Men C beat Wolves 5-2 at Shelly Bay. Onions had a penalty dispatched by Dave Outrim before Wolves’ Mickey Robinson equalised, also from the spot. A long range Mike Baker effort kept Onions ahead at the break and the side improved in the second half with new signing Julian Kinghorn grabbing two goals and sub Matt Clarke getting one while Robinson scored off the underside of the bar for Wolves.
