Forties hope to deliver Knockout punch

On paper, it might seem to be a case of David and Goliath when Fine Leg Byes meet Forties in tomorrow's season-ending Commercial Cricket League Knockout Cup final at Lord's.

Forties already have a record 13 Knockout Cup titles under their belt while Fine Leg Byes are appearing in their first final.

But Forties skipper Gordon Campbell is taking nothing for granted.

"Some would make us favourites but we will not be taking them lightly. They have improved a lot this year and have a number of guys who can hurt you with the bat."

FLB skipper Troy Berkeley said his team would be at full strength, adding: "We're confident and can't see any reason why we can't win."

Forties, narrowly beaten in last year's final by North Village, have had a largely disappointing season, despite beating Village in the annual season-opening Memorial Cup match.

Since then Forties have lost the league crown they won last season, finishing only fourth behind new champions Village, and last week suffered a crushing 104-run defeat at the hands of West Indian Association in the final of the revived League Cup, a week after beating WIA by seven wickets to earn a place in the Knockout Cup final.

Forties will be buoyed by the return of all-rounder David DeSilva, who missed the League Cup final through injury. "We've very pleased to have David back," said Campbell.

FLB, who have a fine attack, will be banking on hard-hitting batsmen Mervin Muckler, a Jamaican who hit a century earlier in the season, Craig Smith and Sri Lankan Jeff DeSilva to get the bulk of their runs.

Berkeley will also draw inspiration from his man-of-the-match unbeaten 75 which helped his former team Watford Sports Club beat Forties by seven wickets in the 1998 final at Sea Breeze Oval.

Tomorrow's 40-overs-a-side match, in which bowlers are limited to eight overs each, will be umpired by Randy Butler and Wally Manders. The game starts at 12.30 p.m.
