Goal-happy Village go clear in title race

North Village are looking a good bet for the Commercial A title after they trounced Tuff Dogs 5-1 on the weekend while last season’s champions Key West Rangers could only get a point off MR Onions.

And Key West’s woes continued with the announcement they would not be allowed to replay their game against Tuff Dogs which was controversially abandoned after 55 minutes when three players were sent off.

The result will stand at 1-1 while the three points Key West thought they had in the bag from beating Robin Hood last month are up for grabs again after the BFA ruled the sides must replay because Hood had been short-handed due to false tsunami rumours.

Village are now five points clear after thumping Dogs on Saturday. Damon Wade, Jamel Smith, Tillman Darrell, Stephen Coddington and Quinell Robinson weighed in with goals while Chris Lima got Dogs’ consolation effort.

Meanwhile, faltering Key West managed a 1-1 draw against Onions in an even contest at St. David’s. Rangers started strongly and could have been two up in the first ten minutes but were denied by Onions’ keeper Greg Fraser and a goal-line clearance by Lester Pun.

Fraser was lucky not to be dismissed after handling the ball several yards out of his area with only the poorly marked lines preventing the ref from being sure about where the incident occurred.

Onions took the lead after 70 minutes when Colin Keane diverted an Eoghan O’Dwyer pass into the goal with the slightest of touches. Key West equalised with 15 minutes remaining when Sergio Griffin controlled a Karl Roberts cross into the path of substitute Mitchell Raynor who struck a powerful shot into the top right-hand corner.

Two strong tackles by Onions substitute Nigel Forrester were enough to earn two yellow cards and a late dismissal.

BAA lie third after a last- gasp free kick grabbed them a 2-2 draw against Dandy Town Roots.

BAA striker Martin Jones pounced early in the first half as Roots hesitated to deal with a long ball. That early setback seemed to spark life into Roots who levelled via Michael Wells. They then took the lead when Lorenzo Simons beat his marker, outsprinted the defence and calmly slotted home.

Roots should have sealed it in the second half but twice blew close-range efforts over the bar. BAA’s Noel McGrath levelled with seconds on the clock remaining with a spectacular free kick.

Lobster Pot are fourth after a comfortable 3-1 win over PHC. Chuckwoma Woods created and notched two first-half goals from distance while Torriano Trott slotted home a through ball with 15 minutes left. Albert Thomas netted PHC’s solitary goal.

Relegation candidates Robin Hood and Island XI did their individual causes no good with a 0-0 draw.

The race for the B Division title is turning into a tale of east versus west with St. George’s All-Stars just keeping their noses ahead of Somerset Extros.

Two first-half goals from Brent Minors and a pair from Bucky Greaves helped All-Stars to a useful 4-2 victory over Valley who missed a second-half penalty in a lively clash at Malabar.

Meanwhile, Extros ran out 4-1 victors over Devonshire Lions.

Vasco lie third after defeating Pest Control 3-2.

Vasco found their shooting boots in the second half with Joe Barrosso twice springing the offside trap and also converting a Mike Smith cross from close range. Pest Control didn’t give up and got two late goals from Macai Bean and Jamie Matthews.

However, the BFA have ruled Vasco and Somerset Bridge must replay their December 9 fixture which was also marred by tsunami nonsense.

Prospect/Fire looked set for their first victory when Tracey Easton scored late on against Boulevard who then equalised in the last four minutes via Troy Smith to grab a 1-1 draw.

Devonshire All-Stars picked up only their second win of the season with the 4-0 victory over Somerset Bridge Peskies as John Corday got a brace while William Benjamin and Harrison Trott were also on target.
