Island golfers come 39th in Worlds
Having begun the final round in 41st place on plus-24 for the tournament , Robert Vallis, William Haddrell and Nick Mansell needed to produce some inspirational golf to finish inside the top 20 — a position team captain Bob Legere said before the event would be an accurate reflection of the local team’s ability.
Port Royal superintendent Nick Mansell produced his best round of the week at the Stellenbosch Golf Course, carding a one-over par 73, while Haddrell finished one shot behind him.
But having narrowly been the team’s most consistent player all tournament Vallis endured a difficult final day — shooting a disappointing six-over par 78 in a round which included an uncharacteristic triple-bogey on the par-four first.
By combining the best two scores to get the team total, Bermuda ended their Eisenhower Cup campaign on plus-27 — some 50 shots behind the Netherlands, who beat second-placed Canada by two strokes to claim their first ever world amateur title.
Haddrell — who will now return to complete a graduate’s degree at Texas Tech before looking to turn professional — and Mansell finished tied for 115th in the individual standing’s on plus-17 for the tournament while Vallis was tied for 123rd with plus-19.
