Jones lays down gauntlet of Cup honours to Colts
Coach Ray Jones has challenged Colts to write another chapter in local football history by becoming the first newly-promoted club to lift the Charity Cup when they face rivals Devonshire Cougars tonight.
Defending Premier Division champions' Cougars have been the "talk of Devonshire" in recent years, but Jones reckons his new-look Colts can reclaim their former title as the pride of the parish.
"It's a local derby and I guess you could say Cougars have been the talk of Devonshire over the last couple of years," said Jones. "But we're looking to reclaim that distinction, which we used to hold over them now we're back in the top-flight.
"We're looking to continue last year's history-making success as we will be the first promoted team to play in the Charity Cup. But we don't just want to play - we want to win the match.
"The result is not going to make or break us, but we're looking to be quite ambitious this season."
Colts achieved what no other First Division club has ever managed by winning the FA Cup last season as well as claiming an unprecedented treble, including the division's title and shield.
And Jones, who also coaches with Bermuda Under-15s, has tipped his team to take the Premier Division by storm this campaign after making a series of shrewd signings to bolster his squad.
"We made history last season and I've challenged the players to leave a legacy behind them. The Charity Cup would be another trophy under our belts," added Jones who has been Colts' head coach for the past eight years.
"We've some pretty high ambitions and expectations as we're not looking to be the typical promoted team just looking to survive. We want to push ourselves beyond that and the Charity Cup gives us a chance to gauge ourselves against the defending Premier Division champions' Cougars.
"These players are the next generation of Colts and I can see them surpassing the achievements of the great Colts' teams in the past. In fact we've already started by winning the FA Cup last season.
"Our FA Cup victory did a lot for the player's confidence as they managed to beat Boulevard who were having a pretty good season.
"That victory seemed to galvanise our fan-base as we saw a few old faces back in the crowd and hopefully there'll be a good turnout tonight."
"With the players we've re-drafted like Marvin Belboda, from Paget, and Quincy Aberdeen, from Somerset Trojans and Phil Anderson, from MR Onions, we've added some experience.
"We've also signed Jakio Williams, from Boulevard, Sean Perichief, from Devonshire Cougars, Terry Foote, from Dandy Town, and Mikre Pace, from Boulevard.
"With all these guys I don't think there will be so much of a gap because we've vast Premier Division experience in these new recruits."
Colts midfielder Clevon Hill will miss the game due to suspension after being sent off in last year's FA Cup final for two bookable offences.
"Clevon will be a big loss for us as tactically he's a sound player," Jones admitted. "He has a good technique and understands the game as our playmaker, but we've got adequate cover.
"There's a few other players who are missing due to suspension but they will all be ready for the first league game of the season."
Kick-off is at 8pm at the BAA Field.
