MR Onions take mighty revenge on Valley
Commercial league leaders MR Onions were in no mood to let their nine point lead slip as they stuffed Valley 8-0 at the weekend.
Valley, the only team to take points off Onions this season when they clawed their way back to a 3-3 draw, paid the price in the return match.
Nigel Forrester opened the scoring with a towering header and further first half goals from Colin Keane and Matt Ashfold put the hosts in a comfortable position at the break.
Keane struck a further three times in the second half to take his season tally to 23, while a close range Keith Donald volley and astute Rael Coen finish completed the scoring.
Dandy Town Roots remain second after beating Key West 4-1. Key West scored first but Roots hit back with two from Adam Outerbridge and one each from Kevin Hurdle and Darron Simons.
Robin Hood are third after winning a hard fought battle against a very lively North Village Rams. Shaun Goater, Ross Lambe and Damon Wade caused the Hood's defence problems all day with their movement up front but with fine performances at the Hood back Village only managed a sole strike from Kevin Bailey in answer to three excellent finishes from Brian Fubler, Teddy Terceira and David Outerbridge as Hood won 3-1.
Father and son duo Colin and Mark James combined to give Lobster Pot a 2-1 win over Somerset Extros. Extros took the lead deep into the first half against the run of play when a mix up and a fumble between keeper and defender Rob gifted the ball to the lone Extros' striker. Mark James equalised for the Pot on his 18th birthday while his dad Colin (CJ) James notched from close range to grab the win on a day when little else ran right for Pot.
BAA Wanderers picked up their first goals and win of 2008 with a hard fought victory over Tuff Dogs at BAA field on Saturday. Wanderers enjoyed the perfect start when, after two minutes, a Sean Hill throughball left Dave Gibbs with only the keeper to beat and Gibbs made no mistake.
However instead of the early goal settling BAA, it had the opposite effect and Dogs began to get a grip on the game and it was no surprise when they equalised through Kevin Warner after 20 minutes.
As the first half progressed BAA regained the upper hand but despite sustained pressure and numerous corners the score remained 1-1 at half time. Veteran Paul Manders headed home an Adam Shaw corner to give BAA all three points.
In Commercial B Group One PHC picked up another win when Hamilton Parish failed to show, while St. David's beat Boulevard 3-0 courtesy of a Sean Boddington hat-trick. St. George's All-Stars, frustrated at having no games for nearly two months, finally got to play and hammered short-handed Somerset Bridge Peskies 15-0.
Goal scoring honours went to Stevie Dickinson who banged in five goals followed by veteran Kenny Pearman and Casey Burgess with hat-tricks.
Brent Minors got two, Carlton Richardson got one while Andrew Richardson fired home from the penalty spot.
In the B division Group Two Devonshire All-Stars lost a golden opportunity to go top with leaders Prospect/Fire on a bye week as they went down 6-2 to Dockyard Falcons. Jason Mackertich and Shawn Spencer were on target for All-Stars. Devonshire Lions move ahead of their local rivals with a 4-2 win over Wolves. Shawn Smith got two while Shannon Burgess and Shawn Showers were also on target. Horris Landy and Ernest Swan tallied for Wolves.
MR Onions Real Men picked up their first victory over a team of 11 players in an official match for two years and 4 days - an astonishing 734 days ¿ with a 3-2 win over Pest Control.
Pest Control drew first blood against the run of play but Michael Baker struck with two goals before the half time as Onions took control. Veteran Phil Heaney put Onions further ahead after the break but an improving Pest Control pounced when Onions got stretched at the back and made the visitors sweat for their long awaited win.
