Promising equestrians eager for success in Caribbean competition
Two of the Island's most promising equestrians, Megan Mahoney and Tyler Lopes, will be flying the Bermuda flag this weekend when they compete against riders from three Caribbean countries in the Caribbean Junior Jumping Competition at the National Equestrian Centre in Devonshire.
Mahoney, riding in the 16-and-under age group, and Lopes, in the 14-and-under group, will be up against equestrians from Jamaica, Barbados and Cayman.
The show takes place annually at different venues and already this year the riders have travelled to Barbados and will later in the year compete in Trinidad.
Each team consists of two riders, one in each age group, who will tackle two different courses of jumps on both Saturday and Sunday, with the rider finishing with the least number of faults declared the winner. The combined score of both riders determines the team result.
Seventeen-year-old Mahoney, in her final few months at Mount Saint Agnes Academy, has been riding since she was seven and has been coached by Abby Bardgett for the last four years.
Her partnership with her mount, Coco, began two years ago and the pair have been successful in the 2'9"-3'3" jumping division this show season.
Lopes, 13, has been riding since he was four and is also coached by Bardgett.
He has been riding his current pony, Playboy - a Bermuda Bred Morgan - for three years and has been successful in dressage, hunters and jumpers. He competes locally in 2'3"-3'0" jumping classes.
He was named junior horseman with the most points after a successful performance at the recent Annual Exhibition. Playboy is currently in first place for the year-end award in the pony jumping 2'3 - 2'9 division.
Title sponsor for this weekend's show is Montpelier Re and money raised will go towards the Bermuda Equestrian Federation's Junior Fund which helps to send young equestrians to overseas competitions.
The show will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.
