Simmons gives Blazers first win
A stunning winner from Angelo Simmons a minute from the end gave the Blazers a deserved victory over hosts Devonshire Colts in this Premier Division clash at Police field yesterday.
Simmons, who had a quiet first half, coolly beat a defender after taking a pass on the right flank and then quickly advanced to fire a ball home from 14 yards to seal the points for the visitors.
The exciting finish two minutes earlier saw Aljame Zuill almost snatching a winner for Colts when his bicycle kick from close in following a corner sailed inches over the bar.
But there is no denying that the Blazers were deserving winners as they controlled majority of the play, pinning Colts in their half for majority of the contest with skipper Chae Simmons and fiery midfielder Niro Smith extremely dominant in the middle of the park.
Colts, on the other hand, had trouble stepping up their game and lacked any real ambition in the middle, often leaving their attack players without decent distributions to force any pressure on the defence.
Despite Colts' sluggish play in the opening half they scored first, albeit against the run of play, Zuill stroking the ball home from 15 yards after getting a cross from Ryan Pernell after 25 minutes.
However, the Blazers remained composed as they had been throughout the half.
Blazers had their moments earlier particularly when left-back John Payne, a steady performer in their defence, watched in agony as his thunderbolt free kick from 22 yards was sensationally tipped over for a corner by Kevin Bean in the Colts' goal.
Eight minutes later the Blazers were close again when a cross from Angelo Simmons was almost headed into his own goal by Colts' centre-back Jakio Williams ¿ the ball narrowly going over the bar for a corner.
Zuill then interrupted a long period of dominance by the Blazers with his goal against the run of play but the setback didn't dishearten the visitors for long as they hit back within two minutes.
The equaliser came after 27 minutes when Simmons and Lamaul Crofton combined with the latter hitting home a rebound after Colts' keeper Bean parried away Simmons' shot.
The trend of play continued in the second half with Blazers holding a decisive edge although they could have allowed Colts momentum if Phil Anderson's grounder after 52 minutes and a fierce free kick by the same player after 70 minutes not been superbly dealt with by Shejuan Swan in the Blazers' goal.
Despite these chances Blazers remained composed and always found it easy to advance within goal-scoring range but falter by delaying their shots or finishing poorly.
Blazers made three substitutions in the second, before Colts made any. Colts' reluctance to turn to their bench was surprising because if any team needed added punch it was them.
Blazers' substitute Ian Coke got a neat pass from Payne after 78 minutes but finished by putting his angled shot into the chest of the advancing Bean in the Colts goal. But Colts hit back four minutes later when Ryan Nisbett blew a good chance when he put a Zuill cross over from close in.
After 83 minutes Colts' defence experienced a few moments of anxiety with Lud-joe Mathews slamming a left-foot shot over from 19 yards and Angelo Simmons forcing the goalkeeper to deny him from close in.
After Zuill's bicycle kick went inches over, Simmons drew the curtain in dramatic fashion by scoring the winner with a minute left.
