Streaker all set to join Cougars
Veteran goalie Dwayne (Streaker) Adams is now headed to Premier Division champions Devonshire Cougars, The Royal Gazette can reveal.
The 34-year-old 'keeper is currently negotiating a deal with the Big Cats and is expected to sign on the dotted line prior to the November 15 late transfer deadline, anonymous Cougars sources said.
Adams completed a highly successful two-year coaching stint at North Village last April, one year after guiding the Rams to a first triple crown (Premier Division, Friendship Trophy and FA Cup) during an unprecedented rookie season at the helm.
It was first speculated the former national team skipper was headed back to First Divsion outfit Southampton Rangers for a second playing stint after hinting at the propsect of lacing up his boots again.
But according to Cougars sources Adams is on the verge of crystalising a deal and being reunited with former national team team-mate and Big Cats coach Shawn Smith who is keen on having a player with such a wealth of experience come onboard at the Den.
"Word has been going around and so we are not going to deny anything at this point," one team official commented yesterday.
Adams' arrival at the Den could go a long way toward easing some of the strain off solitary 'keeper Ricky Brangman who has endured the responsibility of keeping things tidy between the sticks over the past several seasons on his own.
"If the deal comes off, we will have two good goalkeepers at our disposal which should carry us over the hump position-wise," the Cougars source added.
"I don't know what type of agreement has been reached, but his (Adams) arrival will definitely be a valuable asset in terms of the wealth of experience he brings."
The Ace underwriter, currently off Island, comes highly recommended having played three-seasons with United Soccer League (USL) semi- pro outfit Charlotte Eagles and successfully completing trials at English side Crewe Alexandra.
Adams made his Bermuda debut at the age of 16, and was a member of Gary Darrell's senior national squad that advanced to the second round of the 1992 World Cup qualifiers.
During a trophy-laden coaching stint at Rams, Adams saw very little action on the pitch, instead placing more emphasis on coaching after succeeding Kentoine Jennings for the top job.
But after taking Rams to dizzying heights at the first bite of the cherry, Adams' second term as coach paled in comparision as the Pembroke club went trophy-less for the first time in the new millennium.
"It was a good experience and I have no regrets," Adams stated, shortly after severing ties at Bernard Park earlier this year. "I don't see me coaching anytime in the near future but instead getting myself back in shape to return to the game as a player."
