Tucker targets the treble after Wade leads Rangers into final
Southampton Rangers skipper Kwame Tucker has targeted the treble after leading his side to a comprehensive victory over local rivals Pembroke Hamilton Club (PHC) in the semi-final of the West Counties Cup at Southampton Oval on Saturday.
Rangers booked their place in the final where they will meet Willow Cuts thanks to a fine 63 runs by Jason Wade and an impressive four for 41 from Derrick Brangman.
And now Tucker is aiming to lift the third trophy in his first season as captain, having already won the Two-Day League and the Belco Cup.
"I have won the cup before, but this would be my first time as captain, so I am really keen to do that, especially in my first season in charge," he said.
Tucker was particularly pleased with the way his men acquitted themselves in the face of adversity to turn the match around after a poor start in difficult conditions.
"It was a bit of a struggle to start with and the wicket wasn't too conducive to getting runs," he said. "But Jason Wade batted really well and Derrick Brangman bowled very well today, as did Lamont Brangman and I am really proud of them."
Wade was the star of the show though and he fully justified his Most Valuable Player award, coming in at a time when the match could have gone either way and smashing a spectacular 63 off 44 balls, including six fours and four sixes.
Speaking after the match, he said: "I just went out to get the big hits and they went to the boundary.
"We are batting well, bowling well and fielding well and long may it continue."
The hosts got off to a solid enough start with opener Keith Wainwright scoring a cultured 25 before falling to the bowling of Charles Symonds.
But then the rot set in as the first five wickets went for under 100 - cue Wade to the fore, who held the innings together while scoring at a healthy rate as they finished on 213 all out.
Symonds was the pick of the PHC bowling attack with figures of 10-2-25-3, while not far behind were Hasan Durham and Gerald Simons, who weighed in with 9-0-41-2 and 3-0-16-2 respectively.
In reply the visitors were in trouble from the start as opening bat Mark Smith was picked off for a golden duck by Ryan Belboda.
Sheridan Ming, Ricardo Brangman and Durham threatened to launch a fightback as the wickets tumbled around them with figures of 27, 31 and 29 not out respectively, but it was all to prove in vain as PHC finished more than 60 runs short, crashing to a final score of 147 all out.
Derrick Brangman shone for the home side, taking the crucial wickets of number six Daniel Caines and cleaning up the tail end.
Tucker is now relishing the prospect of a showdown with Willow Cuts in the decider.
He said: "It is going to be another tough match, but hopefully we will come away the winners."
