Under-17s head off to US training camp

Bermuda's Under-17 national football team head off to Pennsylvania today for a seven-day training camp in Reading as part of preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in Trinidad & Tobago in June and July.

The squad consists of 22 players, with the majority of them having recently played in the Dallas Cup Under-16 tournament.

The team have been training for the past 11 months under head coach Mark Wade.

"We had the privilege of taking most of our training squad with us to Dallas, so we now are getting the boys acclimatised to the travelling aspect as well as different types of training," said Wade.

"If we can get them at a young age, once they reach the senior level these parts of the game will be a walk in the park."

The seven-day schedule will have the squad training on five consecutive days, including a first day consisting of morning and afternoon sessions.

The programme will also entail intense but high quality coaching as well as conditioning exercises, according to Wade.

With the arrival of new Technical Director Derek Broadley, Bermuda Football Association (BFA) will now use his expertise to prepare all of the Island's national teams for their respective upcoming competitions.

Broadley will be accompanying the Under-17 team to Pennsylvania.

Also travelling is Calvin Blankendal, the head of delegation.

The camp is considered by the BFA as another step in the developmental process of national teams, while it will also provide an opportunity for players to challenge for a spot on the Under-17 World Cup team for their upcoming qualifiers.

The squad are scheduled to return on April 13.
