Veteran Cann hosts third annual race

Ludwig Cann A living legend.

Bermuda road running's elder statesman Ludwig Cann will host his third annual race next weekend at Astwood Park with senior and juniors as well as walkers invited to take part.

The Ludwig Cann 5K is organised by Swan's Running Club and was started as a tribute to one of Bermuda's running icons.

"For over 30 years, Luddy has delighted spectators and participants alike with his obvious love of the sport and the comic relief he brings to it," said Roderick Bassett, president of Swan's Running Club.

"He is best recognised as dressing in all types of colourful garb."

Cann is continuing to recover from a recently-suffered stroke and has spent some time in King Edward VII Hospital.

Last year's winner of the event was Lamont Marshall, who finished in a time of 15:23, and by doing so earned himself an airline ticket to Atlanta and entry into the famous Peachtree 10K Road Race in July.

The female winner was Ashley Couper-Estwanik who finished third overall in a time of 17:49.

Juma Mouchetto is the defending champion in the Kids' 3K.

Almost 80 participants turned out for last year's race, including children under 13 who ran the three kilometre race, over 13s and adults running or walking the 5K course.

"To all of us Luddy is a legend in Bermuda and I encourgae all to come out and support the event," continued Bassett. "Let's make this event something that we all can remember."

The junior race along with the walkers begins at 8.30 am with the senior runners starting at 9 am.
