Webb's strike just enough as defending champions bow out
Devonshire Colts 0 Wolves 1
First Division side Wolves caused an upset by dumping defending champions Devonshire Colts out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage thanks to a solo strike from Nathan Webb at Police Field yesterday.
Colts appeared toothless without their main source of goals Aljame Zuill, absent with a foot injury, and were undone midway through the second half by substitute Webb who floated his long-range shot over 'keeper Kabir Dill.
Webb side-stepped a few challenges on the edge of the box before spotting Dill in no man's land off his line and drifted his effort out of the 'keeper's reach.
The hapless Dill was then dismissed minutes later when he pulled down Vincent Minors with a despairing dive after the Wolves' striker had coolly rounded the gloveman.
Stand-in 'keeper Sean Perinchief donned the number one jersey to face the ensuing spot kick and gratefully gobbled up Keemo Smith's weak effort with a routine catch.
Smith's failure to kill off their opponents appeared to give Colts some added impetus with Ray Jones' men besieging Wolves' area with Omar Ray and Ryan Purnell both forcing flying saves from the visitors' impressive 'keeper Sergio Agustus.
But Wolves weathered the storm and continued to unnerve Colts on the counter attack with coach Eugene Crockwell hailing his "committed defence" as the cornerstones for their shock win.
"It's a great result for us and I thought we played really well," he said. "Our committed defending was the key for us. They (Colts) came at us in the last ten minutes and had a lot of possession but we kept our shape, defended superbly and looked to hit them on the counter attack.
"It's a great feeling to cement our place in the semi-finals by beating the defending champions and it should give us plenty of confidence for the remainder of the season - although we won't get carried away with ourselves."
Dejected Colts coach Ray Jones, whose team became the first from the second tier to lift the FA Cup last season, blamed his side's poor finishing for their unexpected defeat.
"We had our chances to win the game but couldn't get the ball over the line," he said. "As defending champions it's bitterly disappointing to bow out of the FA Cup at this stage.
"I think Wolves only had one chance and that was from outside the box. But credit to them because they took their chance while we missed our chances."
Jones conceded that his side had lacked cutting edge without influential skipper Aljame Zuill.
"Aljame's an important player for us and of course he was a big loss for us. He's a goalscorer and we lost this game because we didn't take our chances."
