Youngsters show how it's done
Visiting Connecticut denied Bermuda a clean sweep of titles at the second annual Clyde Best Invitational at the National Sports Centre (NSC) over the weekend.
The hosts walked away with Under 13 and 15 honors but were denied an unprecedented treble when the Island's Under 14 representatives lost 3-2 to their US rivals in an evenly contested battle.
But there was no stopping Bermuda's Under 13s and Under 15s who claimed bragging rights in their respective divisions.
Bermuda Red saw off a spirited Bermuda Blue in an all local Under 15 final, winning the match 1-0 on a Drewonde Bascombe free-kick outside the box two-minutes from time.
Bermuda Red coach, Ray Jones, said yesterday's victory was a perfect fillip for his team ahead of next month's Dallas Cup.
"We have to take this time to enjoy the feeling of winning and carry on from here," he said. "It's nice to have the boys play opposition other than other Bermuda teams as it gives them a sense of where their game is compared to others around the world in their age group."
Jones refused to single out any individual performances, telling The Royal Gazette: "We are trying to instill a team concept for this squad and today we attacked and defended as a unit and helped each other when things didn't go our way."
Bermuda Under 15 captain Nelson Smith attributed his team's triumph to "unity" and "harmony" on the pitch.
"We have gelled well together and as long as we continue to train hard and have the same work ethic week in week out we will succeed at all we do," he said. "We have unity and harmony on and off the pitch and it feels good to bring the cup back home."
Bermuda also basked in glory in the Under 13 age bracket to lift the title in a round robin tournament. Runners-ups were Connecticut followed by Rhode Island.
