BFA to reward young footballers

Six young local footballers are to receive scholarship awards by Bermuda Football Association for the first time at a ceremony this weekend.

The 2007 Legends' Scholarships Awards will be held in honour of six esteemed Bermudian footballers and administrators tomorrow at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel, from 7 p.m.

The BFA have set aside a total of $50,000 to go towards supplementing higher education - locally or abroad - for successful applicants.

Only applicants registered with a BFA-affiliated club or the Bermuda Referees Association (BRA) were eligible to apply for the programme

This year's scholarship awards are to be dedicated in honour of the following BFA legends: Former BFA president Rueben Alias for $15,000, former BFA administrator Dudley Eve for $10,000, club administrator and educator Diane Hunt for $10,000, former West Ham star striker and BFA technical director Clyde Best for $5,000, educator and long-serving sports administrator Earl (Gabby) Hart for $5,000 and former national team skipper Joe Trott for $5,000.

Chairman of the selection committee Robert Horton said: "The members of the selection committee were extremely impressed with the quality of this year's class of applicants.

"These applicants remind us that there is an abundance of high achievers associated with our football clubs in Bermuda and we want to commend them all and encourage them to keep up the good work both on the football field and in the classroom."
