How sweet it is for Social Club

Charlie Marshall

Jubilant Social Club player/coach Charlie Marshall dedicated his team's maiden Premier Division championship to all those who played an integral role to help bring the club's ambitious long-term vision to fruition.

Moments after replacing Southampton Rangers as the division's top dogs, Marshall singled out Social Club hierarchy Fred (Pinks) Lewis (president), Nolan Walker (senior executive) and Dennis Hart (secretary) and the rest of the supporting cast for special mention amid wild dressing room celebrations.

"When I first came to Social Club Pinks, Nolan and Dennis asked me to help develop a successful cricket programme, and I agreed," he said. "I had to do a bit of research and go out and get a few senior players to work with some of the younger ones at the club to help develop the programme.

"And that's when we were very fortunate to have the likes of Glenn (Blakeney), Kevin (Hurdle), Jamiko (Marshall), Kenny (Phillip) and Terry (Thomas) all come onboard."

Hurdle had a big say in Saturday's league clinching victory, claiming five for 39 to have Rangers in a spin, while new signing Ricky Hoyte also came through in the clutch by stroking a vital half -century under pressure.

Marshall's salutations didn't stop there, however, as trainer Leroy Wilson's contributions also came in for special recognition.

"Curly Joe (Wilson) is a great individual to have around your team. I owe him many thanks because he was the one responsible for getting the guys fit into good shape," he added.

Marshall coached Social Club to the First Division league and KO Cup title during his first season at the helm, a huge achievement that helped instil belief in the team and provide them with a springboard to go onto bigger and better things in years to come.

"The second year I thought we needed some more experience in the team and that's when guys like Nakia (Smith), Detroy (Smith) and Jeffrey (Tyrell) came onboard," he added. "Every year we were able to get more experienced players into the programme.

"I originally agreed to coach the club for three-seasons but decided to stay on another year and I think it was one of the sweetest decisions I ever made because we won the championship this year."

The Angle Street club have been one of the most consistent teams in the top tier in recent years, narrowly missing out on winning a Premier League and KO Cup title last season and earlier this summer reaching the Belco Cup final in their first appearance in the competition. "At the end of the day respect has to go out to the players," added Marshall, who previously won numerous league and cup honours at Bailey's Bay and to this day is still rated as one of the top cover point fielders the Island has ever produced.

"We dedicate this championship to all those who played for Social Club through the years. A lot of people made sacrifices to help the team's cause and for that we are very grateful to give them reward.

"It hasn't been easy, but we are finally league champions. And the guys are very deserving of this achievement."
