New York Red Bulls 0
(Revs win 1-0 on aggregate)
Khano Smith and the New England Revolution cleared the first hurdle of the Major League Soccer play-offs with a 1-0 victory over New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.
US international Taylor Twellman scored in the 64th minute to send the Revolution to the MLS Eastern Conference final for the sixth straight season. The Revs, who drew the first leg 0-0 last weekend in East Rutherford, will meet Chicago Fire in the Conference final on Thursday night.
The winners will go through to the MLS Cup final, the major prize in US club football, where they will meet the Western Conference winners.
Smith played a full game and had one on-target first-half effort saved by Red Bulls 'keeper Jon Conway.
With the victory, New England extended their unbeaten streak against New York to 10 matches (7-0-3) and pushed their play-off unbeaten streak to 12 (8-0-4).
The first half was played in driving rain and strong wind.
New York lost leading scorer Juan Pablo Angel to a concussion in the 56th minute after a collision with Revolution defender Jay Heaps.
Twellman ran down the left wing and converted a cross from MLS assists leader Steve Ralston for New England's goal. Twellman's one-touch shot was initially handled by goalkeeper Jon Conway, but he was unable to control the ball, which trickled over the line.
