<Bz23>Lights trouble continues at Somerset

As a precautionary measure Somerset Cricket Club officials have now decided to remove all but one of their floodlighting poles at the West End sports facility.

The decision comes just over a week after a pole on the north-western end of the ground came crashing down on a member’s car in the parking lot.

Staff from Government’s Works and Engineering and Planning departments are continuing their investigations into the incident that was witnessed by several club members.

For safety reasons, club officials are now in the process of removing two of the three remaining poles, while this weekend’s top-of-the-table Premier Division clash involving Trojans and Devonshire Cougars — scheduled for Somerset Cricket Club — has now been pushed back to February 25.

Somerset officials are now hoping to resume hosting football at their ground by next weekend at the earliest, club president Richard Scott said.

However, all remaining night fixtures at the club have been cancelled and are to be rescheduled, Scott confirmed.

Somerset had the floodlighting system installed three years ago, enabling the club to resume hosting night football and hold a popular summer 20/20 cricket tournament.

“It was definitely an act of God that nobody was hurt,” Scott said.

“And we are taking the necessary steps to ensure this sort of thing never happens again.”
