Mariners clinch the Sevens silverware
Mariners surprised the local rugby world by winning both the men's and women's titles in the bermuda Rugby Union's mid-season Sevens tournament.
In the first match Teachers defeated Police 28-7. Mariners took on a decimated Renegades squad who did well just to field a team as most players were off celebrating club-mate Collin Targett's wedding.
Mariners with Richard Holden and West Indies player Kris Furbert combining superbly, enjoyed a 24-7 victory. Two tries from Welshman Allun Thomas complemented scores from Furbert and Warren Green. A conversion from Holden and another from Lachie Armour completed Greens' scoring.
Mariners continued their momentum into their second game and clawed a 12-10 victory over an unlucky Teachers side. Again the combined attacking force of Holden and Furbert proved the difference.
Police made the tournament interesting with a one-sided 35-7 victory over Renegades setting up an intriguing match with Mariners that would eventually decide who won the tournament.
Police started out well and got early tries from Andrew Flint and Michael Kane, who missed the conversions. This proved crucial as the Mariners staged a fightback over a visibly tiring Police squad.
Second-half tries from the dynamic duo Furbert and Holden, who then nailed the important conversion, secured Mariners the Men's Sevens Trophy. Teachers finished off their tournament with a win over the struggling Renegades.
This weekend sees a crucial make-up game between Teachers and Police at 3.30pm at Malabar- a loss by either team will all but end their title aspirations.
The ladies' event started with Teachers ladies drawing 1-1 with Mariners, with Amy Wolfinger and Chloe Martin scoring.
The Police ladies demolished a severely depleted Renegades outfit 4-0, with Rachel Black, Kate Brown, Julia Mansfield and Jamie Walker all scoring for Police.
Mariners then beat the hapless Renegades 5-0. Tries from Jamie Murdoch, Mary-Ann Rowlston, Laryssa Yuel, Julia Taggart and Michelle Berendt put the surprising lady sailors in the driver seat.
Needing a win to stay in the hunt for silverware, Police etched out a hard-fought 3-2 win over Teachers. Two tries from Kate Brown and a third by Julia Mansfield overcame the Reds' scores from Chloe Martin and Jen Crawford.
In the late consolation game, Teachers walked away with a 5-0 win over a Renegades squad missing five of their key players. Tries from Chloe Martin (2), Jen Crawford, Kim Spencer and Chernelle Gibbons restored some pride to Alvin Harvey's squad.
Mariners defeated Police 3-1 in the winner-takes-all clash that decided the tournament winners. Amy Wolfinger scored two tries and Mary-Ann Rowlston notched the third. Kate Brown scored a consolation try for Police.
