Owen nets for Newcastle
LONDON (Reuters) - Newcastle United striker Michael Owen, who missed most of the last two seasons through injury, scored his first competitive club goal since December 2005 in their 2-0 League Cup second-round win over Barnsley last night.
Owen struck after 57 minutes with a well-placed shot to grab his first competitive goal in a black-and-white shirt since he scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 win over West Ham United on December 17, 2005. Two weeks later he broke his foot and subsequent injuries have restricted him to just a handful of appearances since then.
Substitute Obafemi Martins, who replaced Owen after 82 minutes, added a second against the second division side in the 86th minute as Newcastle maintained their unbeaten start to the season under new coach Sam Allardyce.
Manchester City, among the early-season leaders in the Premier League, won 2-1 at second-division Bristol City, while Middlesbrough beat third division Northampton Town 2-0 at the Riverside.
