Renegades face unpredictable Mariners

While many rugby fans eyes will be eagerly taking in this weekend's commencement of the annual Six Nations Championships, local rugby will be played at Police Field tomorrow, as a last minute cancellation by NSC sees the game of musical fields continue to plague the Bermuda Rugby Football Unions scheduling.

The lack of a consistent home ground can only hamper the National team's build up for the upcoming Rugby World Cup 2011 qualifying tournament in Caymans from the April 19 to 27. Hopefully rugby will be an item on the agenda in the upcoming the 23rd Annual Sports Conference on February 9 hosted by Minister of the Environment and Sports Elvin James.

It will be interesting to see how much rugby features in the minister's vision of sports in Bermuda - considering that rugby has been very good to Bermuda over the years; Bermuda has participated in the Caribbean champions for over 30 years, and until recently reigned supreme, the National teams have been impeccable ambassadors for Bermuda world wide, many Bermudians have represented the West Indies in rugby and the World Rugby Classic is a premier sporting event attracting international exposure to the island.

Local rugby has gone through a renaissance of sorts lately with a thriving mini rugby program with over 200 kids participating and a strong Under 21 team coming through. Rugby is acclaimed as a character building sport that emphasis team work and sportsmanship. So, the question begs to be asked; why doesn't the sport get more support from government?

With only two league games left and only four points separating leaders Renegades from rivals Teachers there is everything to play for.

In the curtain raiser at 1:30 p.m. Renegades will be looking to solve the enigma that is the Mariners RFC. On any given day the Greens have shown they can, not only compete but, dominate a game.

They appear to have the 'Gades number and their no nonsense physical approach has highlighted the frailties of the current league champions. Teachers must replicate their previous bonus point victory over a disappointing Police team, if they are to challenge for their first league title in four years.

Whereas the Police team must find some way out of the morass they are currently experiencing and build momentum for the impending Nichol Shield tournament.

In Ladies rugby, a tie or a win over Mariners will secure Renegades their second league title in as many years. The second game will see Police looking to take advantage of a Teachers side ravished by the absence of key players. Teachers must win and hope for an unlikely upset by Mariners if they are to keep their title hopes alive.
