United face Roma rematch
MONTE CARLO (Reuters) - Manchester United and AS Roma will meet in the Champions League group stages, just a few months after violence marred their quarter-final clash.
The two teams were drawn in Group F yesterday, along with Sporting Lisbon and Dynamo Kiev.
A United fan was stabbed in Rome during their first leg on April 4. There were also scuffles between the fans outside Old Trafford before the home team's 7-1 romp in the return match.
"The match at Old Trafford was one of the greatest nights in our history and we hope both legs are remembered this time for what happens on the pitch, not off it," United chief executive David Gill told Reuters.
"Although our supporters were in no way to blame, we will be working very hard with Roma and UEFA to solve any problems that occurred last time. As for the rest of the draw, going to Lisbon with (Portuguese players) Nani and Ronaldo will be very interesting."
Holders AC Milan were drawn with Benfica, Celtic and Shakhtar Donetsk in Group D.
Liverpool, beaten 2-1 by Milan in the final in Athens, will face 2004 winners Porto, Olympique Marseille and Besiktas in Group A.
Marseille striker Djibril Cisse, who was used sparingly by manager Rafael Benitez during his time at Liverpool, will have a point to prove.
In 2004, the Ligue 1 side knocked the Merseysiders out of the UEFA Cup in the round of 16.
"We have recent experience of Marseille and Porto and it will be nice for our fans to return to Turkey," said Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.
"Every game will be difficult and in this competition you just never know, anything can happen. We have to respect every team in every game and hopefully we can repeat our success of last year and maybe go one further."
Chelsea, who have never reached a European Cup final, will face tough competition in Group B against Valencia, Schalke 04 and Rosenborg.
"Valencia will be very difficult as we know from last year when we managed to beat them," said Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon.
The group stages will be no walkover for nine-times champions Real Madrid, who were drawn in Group C along with Werder Bremen, Lazio and Olympiakos Piraeus.
Barcelona, who won the competition in 2006, face six-times French league champions Olympique Lyon, German champions VfB Stuttgart and Scottish runners-up Rangers in Group E.
"With the Valencia group, our group is the toughest," said Barcelona president Joan Laporta.
"The good news is Lyon are not as strong as last year. They have lost some players and have many injury problems."
Among the players Lyon have lost is France full back Eric Abidal, who joined Barca in June.
"The other good news is we will not have to travel far to play our games," added Laporta.
Arsenal were drawn in Group H with Steaua Bucharest, Slavia Prague and the winner of the third qualifying round tie between Sevilla and AEK Athens.
Sevilla travel to Athens on Monday with a 2-0 advantage.
Italian champions Inter will face PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Fenerbahce in Group G. The opening matches are on September 18-19.
