Wolves looking to build on cup success

Wolves are hoping that the momentum they gained from last Sunday’s Dudley Eve First Division final victory over Devonshire Colts at Wellington Oval will enable them to make a spirited run in the league title race.

An abbreviated schedule limits play to First Division action tomorrow when Eugene Crockwell’s squad will have an opportunity to send a clear message to the two teams ahead of them — leaders Ireland Rangers and second-placed Devonshire Colts — that Wolves also mean business and can make it a close three-team race down to the wire.

Going into the weekend Ireland Rangers have 22 points from their nine matches while Colts follow on 20 points from nine and Wolves 19 from nine.

Crockwell will be hoping his players can keep their foot on the throttle and not allow matches they should win get away from them — mindful of a few games in the first half of the season when indifferent performances allowed opponents to deny them valuable points.

Following their Dudley Eve victory over Colts, key forward Vince Minors let it be known that their mission wasn’t over as it was now their intention to focus on promotion back to the Premier Division.

Tomorrow they should be able to help that cause by taking maximum points from lowly X’Roads in a clash at Devonshire Rec. and continue to battle it out with the leaders.

While Wolves should get all three points, Ireland Rangers should also be able to maintain their grip on top spot with a comfortable victory over a team hovering in the lower half of the table, Social Club.

The third team challenging for promotion, Colts, should also end the day with a maximum three points at the expense of lowly Hamilton Parish after their match-up at Lord’s.

Southampton Rangers could remain within striking distance of the promotion race with a victory over St. George’s at Southampton Oval while fifth-placed Prospect are favoured to come away triumphant against Eagles at Prospect.
