Bermuda's pro golf challenge caved in at the Colonial Country Club in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, yesterday when the PGA were decisively beaten in the singles matches.
The New England PGA triumphed 19-11 yesterday and won the overall series 35-25 with only Kim Swan, Keith Smith and John Mason recording victories out of the 10 matches that were contested with Kevin Benevides salvaging a draw.
Swan had a 3-0 win over Paul Parajeckas while Smith beat John Frizzell and Mason topped Jack Devine, both by 21 -1 scores. Benevides drew 11 -11 with Gerry Mackedon.
The other six matches all went to the New England PGA.
HARNESS RACING RAH The season-opener of harness pony racing has been postponed until next Saturday to allow resurfacing of the Vesey Street track.
It was initially planned to have parts of the track repaired after rain had washed off some of the surface. Racing on September 19 will begin at 5 p.m.
TARGET SHOOTING SHO A.Rabain and E.Robinson shared the honours at the Coral Reefs Rifle and Pistol Club competition at the Prospect Range on Wednesday with scores of 190.
D.Sherlock and R.Roberts were joint third on 186.
SNOOKER SNO National Sports Club successfully defended their title in this year's Super Six snooker tournament, finishing 12 points clear of runners-up Queens I.
Queens gained the satisfaction of beating the champions on the final week, 4-3, with Greg Falzone gaining two wins over Randy Paterson. Falzone was joined by Steven Roberts, who split frames with Mike Tatem and had the high break of 19. Paul Charleton picked up two points for Nationals to improve his summer record to 9-1.
Old Colony Club I sewed up third place with a solid 6-1 win over Queens II with Robert Gaglio, Dennis Coyle and Brian Haxton scoring two points each.
Queens' Chris Dakin prevented a whitewash by taking one game against Gaglio.
In the season's other finale, Police drubbed the Dream Team 7-0, led by Andy Wright's hat-trick. Tim Carr and Rick Clark also scored double wins for Police.
Tony DeSilva edged Falzone for the aggregate trophy. Although both finished with 16 league points, DeSilva's won-lost record of 14-2 was one better than Falzone's 13-3. DeSilva sat out the last match.
Police's Steve Dunleavy scored the highest break of the summer league with a 37. Other 30-breaks were recorded by Falzone, Steven Roberts and Brian Haxton.
BOWLING BOW The Fishbowl League returned to the lanes recently with a full complement of 14 teams as Cow Pollies showed their stripes to Snappers with a 4-0 win. Bill Adams led the winners with a 627 handicap series as Barbara Smith bowled the women's high scratch game and series, a 206 and 517.
Hinds and Wahoo battled to a 3-1 win for Wahoo at the lead of Doug Hines' top series of the night of 667, with first and second games of 238 and 223 added for good measure as David Mello added a 213.
The rookie team in the league, Rockfish, was matched against the seasoned Dolphins who won 31 -1 . Basil Gibbons was the leading force for the Rockfish with a 508 series.
Joe Correia led Marlins to a 3-1 victory over Mackerel with the men's second high series of 563 and added two 202 games to the effort. Mackerel surged in the last game for a 1,026 but it was not enough to win any more than one point.
Barracuda showed their teeth to Tuna and ended the night with three of the four points. Prudence Spriggs claimed the women's second high series with her 515 for Barracuda as Clifford Maxwell was tops with a 524 for Tuna.
Porgies and Angel Fish finished all square at 2-2 as Oscar Andrade led the Angels' effort with the third high series 554 with support from Geoffrey Blee's 538.
Sharks have served notice after winning three points from Piranhas. Reggie Tavares led their cause with a 503 series.
SAILING SLG The second annual Sir John W. Cox Cup will take place on September 20 starting at 10 a.m.
The Bermuda Offshore Cruising Association, in conjunction with sponsor Pearman Watlington, are putting on the race in honour of PW's late chairman Sir John W. Cox who passed away in December 1990.
