A tie-breaker was needed to decide the winner in the Laser class in the Bank of Butterfield/BSA National Youth Sailing Championships last Sunday.
A battle between winner James Botelho and second-place Matt Greenslade ended after Botelho had a fourth, two seconds and three firsts in two days of racing while Greenslade had four firsts and two seconds.
Nicki Crane and Charlotte Watlington prevailed over the new team of Jonathan Carter and Adrienne Smith in the 420 class.
Crane and Watlington had five firsts and a third while Carter and Smith recorded a first, three seconds and three thirds. In the JY class Eric Berkeley and Michael Shrubb were first with Jarrod Zancanella and Geno Jones second.
Zander Kirkland followed up on his win at the recent Canadian Olympic Training Regatta with a victory in the Optimist class, winning by seven points over eight races.
Lawson Williams of Sandys Boat Club won the Blue Fleet for 13-year-olds and was seventh overall. Edward Thompson won the White Fleet (11-year-olds) and was 11th overall. By winning the 1997 Nationals, Kirkland also won the Bank of Butterfield Grand Prix series of five events held over the summer. Second was Spurling, followed by Crane, Williams and Alex Lines.
