Adams blunder proves costly as Red Devils fall
An amazing blunder by goalkeeper Dwayne Adams put the skids under North Village's New Year campaign as they crashed to Boulevard.
Adams failed to catch a swerving 60th-minute strike from 15 yards by Boulevard marksman Dwight Warren.
The ball squirmed agonisingly through Adams' normally assured grasp, and bobbled into the right-hand corner of the goal.
It was an uncharacteristic bungle, and tipped the balance between two evenly-matched teams.
Although Boulevard had grabbed an early lead from a tap-in by striker Johnny Boyles, Village looked well capable of hitting back.
Their midfield and forward lines brim with talent and invention.
But too often they flatter to deceive, and yesterday was no different as chance after chance went begging.
Warren's second-half goal, however, put the match beyond their reach.
And although Village staged a spirited comeback, and snatched one back moments from the end, it was all too late.
For the small crowd who braved the cold to turn up at St. David's there was little to savour in the way of flowing soccer.
A gusting wind put paid to that. Both sides experienced problems just passing the ball.
The conditions did, however, introduce an element of unpredictability, providing spurts of excitement.
Boulevard, with the wind in their favour, got off to a dream start, through a well-constructed team effort.
Boyles found himself at the end of a passing movement, slotting the ball past Adams from inside six yards.
In the 29th minute, Village should have levelled things following a blistering 25-yard free kick from Damon Wade.
It was terrific shot, which seemed to gather pace as it went, and take Boulevard 'keeper Kimandae Walker unprepared.
Instead of grabbing the ball, he spooned it with both hands on to his crossbar.
Clinton Caisey, following up, should have tucked away the rebound from around five yards.
But he completely miscued the ball, which looped over Walker's goal.
Caisey was soon the culprit again minutes after the start of the second half.
He seemed certain of scoring from 10 yards out, but, with only Walker to beat, he again lofted the ball over the right of the goal.
The misses were to prove costly. In the 60th minute Adams decided to throw the ball out from his area, rather than kick it.
Given the wind conditions, it was a perilous thing to do, and the ball was headed back from the halfway line to Warren, who found himself unmarked.
Egged on by Boulevard's vocal fans, he had time to line up his shot, and sink Village's hopes.
Their 90th-minute goal had an element of luck as Walker appeared confused by the flight of ball in the wind.
Midfielder Stephen Coddington was able to tap in from around five yards.
